either side of the river and then at the white abode town about a ter of a mile above and na a chris tian one either he added there was reason tor mr macdou galls disgust for the triton had been swinging to her in the little centra american harbor for five days with a prospect of so swinging tor fifty days more the motive power of the steamer was represented by mr daniel watts at the time being both first and second engineer tor the second engineer had been left sick in hospital at maracallo Mara calbo and mr watts was not at his post the triton had entered the port for the purpose of making some repairs to her machinery and when mr watts had accomplished this he went ashore there he filled with the most villainous and smote on the head a peaceable citizen so that his life was endangered mr watts in company with another law breaker and many fleas now languished in the adobe calibozo calabozo cala bozo and as no one aboard the steamer was capable of running the engine she lay at anchor A vee exclaimed mcdougall to the captain on the bridge A boat had put out from the town and was I 1 bearing for the steamer the man row ing presenting an odd spectacle as his huge sombrero bobbed in union with the motions of his body the boat came alongside and fling ing a line aboard which mr macdou gall listlessly fastened the man climbed on the steamer with the agil ity of a monkey he was a lithe fel low with a red sash about bis waist and bis unbuttoned calzo neros flap ping his legs captain he said interrogatively to mcdougall the mate pointed out the officer on the bridge and slouched behind the man as he mounted the ladder no neer remarked the man to the captain it was well that his knowledge of english did not permit his grasping captain bennetts reply evidently he did not grasp it tor he went on in calibozo calabozo cala bozo he continued man he strike he die soon you want him want whoa growled the skipper neer replied the man of course I 1 want him the drunken swine but what have you to do with it you saffron colored lubber snap ped captain bannett hundred dollar me get him said the man coolly rolling a cigarette the captain stared at the unmoved native and so did mcdougall then all entered the cabin and the man un folded his plan in broken english he alone knew of a weak spot in the calibozo calabozo cala bozo where a jail delivery might be made and tor the sum of one hundred dollars be would agree to deliver mr watts to the captain at midnight at a spot just opposite where the steamer lay A boat was to be ready and the vessel was to leave the port at once As proof of his sincerity the man wanted no money until the engineer was safely in the boat the two officers conferred at the worst they could be no losers and otherwise the steamer might lay tor what have you to do with it you saffron colored lubber days in that stewing harbor true the abduction of a criminal was a fracture of international law but then it would be difficult to prove the steamer s complicity in the deed and the state was a small one etc the agreement was accordingly made and the man departed mr me dougall went up to the town and secured the papers for departure that day and the stokers were ordered to make up the fires the night came on dark and heavy there was no moon and the star had hat subdued brilliancy of a hot night finally the chapparal chap paral brushed the skipper s head causing him to start apart from the nocturnal concert there was no sound the darkness was intense the air dampy and tepid hell na be here said mcdougall either kill some more people and be hung or be a bet ter man the world 11 be benefited either way when cape maisl was sighted the steamer bore into the land and the uninvited guest was landed he took his departure gracefully with a sweep ing bow to the skipper doubtless ap predating any sort of country as a exchange for the gallows after he boat had returned and the steam er was under way the captain remark ed to the mate I 1 was thinking that this whole scheme of jail delivery was to get this fellow we ve just put ashore tree it I 1 d held back I 1 d have gotten my engineer without
