Show t 1 1st Time ln12Years Junior high matmen bring home state titles wrestlers from Thirty-seve- n Roosevelt, Altamont and Duchesne attended the Junior High State A DUCI IESNE COUNT Y junior high wrestler trys for a take down at the state meet in Delta, Utah. Wrestling Championships in Delta last weekend and brought home a third place team trophy and 20 individual medals. This is the first time in over 12 years that a junior high wrestling team from Duchesne County has placed in the state tournament. Three of the wrestlers brought home gold medals when they were crowned state champions. Gold medalists are: Ryan Cloward, Roosevelt, 124 lb.; Chad McMullin, Roosevelt, heavy weight; and Mike Ivie, Duchesne, 83 lb. Silver medals were earned by Roosevelt wrestlers Morgan Wisener, 132 lb.; Jason Winterton, 104 lb.; and Thomas Carter, 73 lb. Bronze medals were brought home bv Roosevelt wrestlers Joshua Liddell, 65 lb.; Daniel M us toe, 145 lb.; and Steve Harmaton, 165 lb. Cody Burdett, 100 lb. won a 4th place medal. Those claiming 5th place medals from Roosevelt were; Chuck Genereauz, 155 lb. and True Prisbey, 195 lb. Sixth place medals went to Garrett Cloward, 54 lb.; Jason Hollowbaugh, 70 lb.; Daniel Farnsworth, 93 lb.; Daniel VanTassell, 961b. and Cody Bowden, 108 lb. From Altamont, Rusty Bird, 90 lb. placed 4th; Jesse Farnsworth, 100 lb.and Jeremy Mitchell, 145 lb. both brought home 6th place medals. Twenty wrestlers claimed individual medals. Union girls beat Lehi By Aldon Rachele Union High School's boys basketball team lost the rematch ofthe 1997 State Tournament Title Game when they were smashed by but the Lady Cougars Lehi, gained some honor for Roosevelt by wiping out the Pioneers, 66 to 46, to Friday improve their record to 15-in Lehi. Unions girls are ranked No. 1 by the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News in its poll. The Lady Cougars are 0 in region play. 3-- A 75-5- 3, 3-- A 4-- The Male and Lady Cougars will host Uintah, Wednesday with the girls playing at 5:15 p.m. and boys at 7 p.m. The Lady Cougars dominated play right from the start by taking a 17-- 7 first quarter advantage. Union led 35-1- 7 at the half, and had a 49-3-3 lead after three quarters. Union pumped in 17 more in the fourth to win by 20. Union had three ladies hit for Sheila double figures with Hutchison pumping in 16, Bev Richen scoring 15 and Alicia Uresk adding 14. Tia McCairns scored eight, and Sarah Colton tossed in seven. Nicole Larsen added three and Kylene Uresk fired in two and Angie Gayler scored one. Gilman and Yates led Lehi with 14. Bo Gardner led the Cats with 15 points and Olsen tossed in 10. Nelson scored eight and Hancock seven. Braden Cooper was the top Pioneer at 17. Last season, Union's boys met Lehi three times and lost three times with the last setback a tough game for the state title. Union Cougar matmen clobber Carbon Dino tusslers, 51 to 24 By Aldon Rachele Union High Schools wrestling team jumped out to a 24-- 0 lead and then forced the Dinosaurs from Carbon into extinction with a 4 51-2- pounding, Tuesday night in Roosevelt. The Cougars will take part in the region meet in Vernal, Thursday, February 5. Eight pins greeted wrestlers throughout the evening, but Terrell Winterton, Union's 103 pounder, was the first one to cash in with a fall as he dropped Levi Riche with 33 seconds left in the second round. Unions 112 pounder, Travis Hammons was a Copy Cat or Copy Cougar, which ever a Union fan prefers, as he pinned Robert Howa with 39 seconds remaining in round No. 1. Family Entertainment. The Union High swimmers competed yesterday and today, Feb. 2, 3, at the Region 10 swim meet being held in Park City and are vying for positions to the 3A State Championship meet to be held Feb. 13, 14, in Provo. Our girls relay team has a good opportunity to qualify in the 200 Free and 400 Free events, said Kirk Wentworth, Union swim team coach. This would be the first time for a relay team to qualify for the state meet in the swimming competition. Im excited, and the girls are excited about the opportunity, said Wentworth. The relay team members are Beth Peterson, Heather Needles, Jessie Bentz, and Crystal Pittman. The region swim meet will be the final opportunity for the swimmers to achieve their best times before the seeding takes place for the state meet. Besides the relays, we have some individual swimmers who may also qualify for state, said Wentworth. Beth Peterson, senior, has a good Buy your tickets early. Union High completed its regular swim season in January with meets against Carbon, West, and Wasatch. Monticello edged Duchesne, Friday and then lucked out again, Saturday when San they nipped Altamont, 53-5Juan had an easy time. They Fridav whipped Altamont, 62-3and Duchesne, Saturday. Monticello used a great start of 18-- 9 in the first quarter to guide them to victory over Duchesne.
