Show I T 4 r BASIN STANDARD January 27. 1900 Pace 14 ' by Aldon Rachele Over the years I've heard cheers from fans and cheerleaders. Some of the Great Words Have Been Gems ly stands out is a cheer that went as follows: Twist Them, Twist Them, Twist Them Like A Pretzel, Whoopee!! Twist Them, Twist Them, Twist Them Like A Pretzel, Whoopee!!! The twisting tune was recited by 1968 RJH cheerleaders, Paula and Some Not, but they all lend support to the athlete on the mat, court, diamond cr football field. Recently, I attended a Union High School boys' basketball team game vs. Moffat County in Roosevelt, and one fan came up with some witty comments. He didnt agree with an official on a call that was made and he said, Take your glass eye out and wash it out, ref, and then he figured a hoopster was getting hammered by an opposing player, but a foul wasn't called, and so he said, Hey ref, put a saddle on him and then he can ride him. The fan in the stands was complaining about too much contact without a whistle sounding to signul a foul. I wrestled a bit in high school, but mainly I was a Roosevelt Junior High tusslcr. I had a few matches in 1968 under the direction of our coach, Scott Hirschi, but what real Mortensen, Lynette Jenninga, Linda Carlson and Laurie Sprouse. I looked at a copy of the 1967 Roosevelt Junior High yearbook and the cheerleaders were Lorna Bastian, Peggy Kissling and Tami Workman (I don't know why they had just three cheerleaders). They were the first to do the Twist Them Cheer" at RJH. However, I never was able to twist my opponent into the proper position as most of the time I was trying to twist myself out of danger. I only won one match during my two-yecareer, but I take pride in that I was only pinned two times. Once to Cloyd Wooley, who went on to become a state championship matman at Uintah High School in 1971, and a second time to qjy Best ar . Friend, Perry. I figured if I was going to go down on a fall it might as well be to my buddy. Our Roosevelt Junior High team mainly wrestled West and Vernal Junior High, and thus we had more matches during practice. I usually battled Danny Lamb or James Lloyd. Some other wrestlers from 1968 are Carl VanTaasell, Jet Abegglen, Noel Leavitt, Don Larson, David Bell, Don Gingell, Dee Foote, Kevin Heaton, David Hicken, Arvin Winterton. There were many others, but I cant recall them I've forgotten them due to battles where 1 crashed into a table (practices were held in the RJH all-ma- ybe kitchen). The first wrestling team in the history of Roosevelt Junior High was in 1967, and besides yours truly, Kevin Ashby, Jon Bingham, and Believe It Or Notbasketball play- ers, Brad Hancock and Danny Long were on the mat squad. Hancock and Long abandoned their mat careers and played basketball for Union High School-D- id they make the right decision? (Answer. "We will never know!) By the way Brads son Beau Hancock plays for the 1998 Union hoop team and Dannys son, Andy Long is the member of that basketball squad in Vernal for now what is that school's name Oh High School. The Utes were ranked in the top 5 in the class by the Salt Lake Tribune last week. Of course most players and fans just ignore the clever remarks as their No. 1 focus is on The Game or Match! yeah--Uint- 3-- A - AHS earns fourth place n&n Saturday, Sunday, Monday February Tractors 6. 5. 8-- 32-2- 1, 2, 3 1 997 sell at 12:00 Noon Saturday, February 1st Jay Jay Rd..
