Cloned sheep Doily chosen most significant science event of 1997 By Paul RecerAP Science Writer Dolly, the sheep who ignited ternational controversy about in- re- production through cloning, is about to reproduce the way. A scientist at the Roslin Institute in Scotland said this week that Dolly has been mated and is expected to have a lamb sometime in April. "She is still perfectly fine and healthy, said Dr. Ian Wilmut, leader of the Roslin research team. We plan to give her as normal a life as possible." Giving birth to a Iamb, he said, "will prove one more important detail that Dolly is normal. We are trying to show that she can reproduce and have a normal life span. Will Dollys cloning from the cell of an adult sheep "electrified both the research community and the general public, said the editors of Science, a prominent publication that features general scientific research. "Although animals had been cloned before, creating a sheep from ewe was a single cell of a a stunning technological feat that many had thought impossible, the journal said. Dolly was created by research ers who took the nucleus from an adult sheep cell and put it into an egg from another adult sheep. The nucleus of the egg had been removed so that it contained no DNA or genes. The egg was then put into the uterus of an unre- lated sheep. When Dolly was born, her genes duplicated those in the donated cell. She is genetically unrelated to either the ewe that bore her or the ewe that donated the egg. Continued on page 15 Increase interest rates? Economists now split By Dave Skidmore Associated Press writer For months, most economists have had an unchanging refrain when it comes to forecasting interest-rate decisions from the Federal Reserve: No increase now but probably later. Later kept getting postponed, but analysts doggedly stuck by their insistence that at some point the central bank would increase rates to preserve the best inflation performance in three decadee. Now, theyre not so sure. The uncertainties about the spillover on the United States from Asias financial crises has split economists into two distinct camps. They agree the Fed is on hold for now, that the central bank doesn't want to add fuel to the Asian fire by giving investors a reason to flee the region in favor of securities paying higher interest rates. The central bank as mud) as confirmed that belief Tuesday by deciding to maintain its benchmark short-torate at 5.5 percent 0 its level since late March. Goals, however, that are reasonable, specific, measurable and that can be broken down into parts are great stepping stones to personal growth and accomplishment In 1953, Yale University surveyed its graduating class and discovered that only 3 percent had written goals. Twenty years later, yale surveyed the same class and learned that the 3 percent who had written goals had amassed a net worth greater than that of the other . 97 percent combined. According to Keith Ellis, author of "Goal Setting for People Who Hate to Set Goals, the moral of the story is that goals work, but almost nobody uses them. As the new year begins, it may be worthwhile to review some criteria for effective goal setting. Be reasonable. If a goal is unrealistic, you won't try to pursue it and you will fall back into your old habits after only a few weeks or even days. Set a goal that builds on your strengths and that you believe is achievable. Be specific. The more specific the goal, the more real it becomes as you visualize yourself achieving it. General ideas such as make more money, be happier or date more wont motivate you as much as specific objectives that you can visualize clearly and that enable you to see your progress. Break the goal into daily tasks. Unless you plan steps to be taken on a daily basis toward your goal, it will remain vague ar.d will be easy to forget. Place reminders in a planner or a note on the mirror or desk to keep goals on your mind. Outline steps that can be built into your daily routine. If you can make the steps become habits, reaching the goal becomes the natural result. Measure your achievements. There are two parts to measure - the daily tasks that lead to the goal and the final goal itself. Though some goals are easier to chart than others, marking offa calendar or chart can motivate you as you see your progress. the dark: The best and worst movies of 1997 In 781-548- 6.
