Show 'sv'ft o.fa ;;V School Board Member School Board member Melvina R. Taaacr Lynn Snow A common fault made in discussing education is to describe it as a posture or stance, for example, she was educated at B.Y.U or he finished his education last year." In actuality, education is an exciting responsibility and an ongoing obligation. The student's educational welfare in this district depends on a whole series of nows." The nows" are partially filmed by decisions made by the board to promote academic excellence and fulfill the ongoing obligation. ' It has been the vision of the Duchesne County School Board to help each student accomplish hutfier potential and be prepared to make that step over the bridge, into college or employment A vision has little value written on paper, it needs to be acted upon. I believe that vision has become closer to reality this year, through decisions which have been made, committees which have been established, and a movement towards enriched cooperation between the community and the board. We can look at our district and worry about what we dont have, or we can capitalise upon our available resources. There is a need, however, to focus energy on those illusive entities which would help us cany out our exciting and challenging responsibility of education. I commend' the employees of the district in their various capacities, as they meet the challenges and obstacles of education on a daily basis. They meet them in a forthright manner because, of their love of children and concern Cor education. . The pest cix yearn have been eventful for the school district I am continually impressed with the efforts of the district educators. I feel die district has made good improvements in some areas with other areas continuing to need our best efforts. There never seems to be n durtage of chaOangee. With die decline of die tax base of Duchesne County have come new challenges to meet the building needs of our student growth. It has become much more difficult to provide dm needed facilities without incurring debt In the near future taxpayers will decide if die District has been prudent with their finds and if taxpayers are willing to go into debt for needed school improvements. In 1992 the district paid off the indebtedness outstanding from 1972. The District had s choice then of keeping die levy and using it for other building purposes or returning it to die taxpayers and asking them again for money when it was needed. The District reduced the capital levy at that time. Waste now at dial point of asking fix taxpayer approval to do additions to Duchesne High, Altamont High, and East Elementary, as well ss major roof repairs to several schools. Every oooe in a while we just have to remind ourselves that the only things more expensive dun education is the lack of it. 1 . School Board Member John Hullinger As die newest member of die school board, serving since July when board member Tim Cox moved to North Dakota, my observations are pertinent about present board functions and climate but would be rather shallow if I were to address matters of past board actions. I attended the School Baaed Academy in September and received some good board and school training. It seems to me dud each administrator- - the Superintendent, his assistants and principals make decisions based on sound reasonable judgment. As a general rule, we have supported the decisions and believe they have been decisions made in dm best interest of the students ss whole and die district Financially the district is solvent and seems to be operated under guidelines of sound fiscal judgment. The board, as group, is diverse enough to get a variety of opinions, yet have been supportive of any decisions. I believe each has the best interests of die students, faculty, and administration at heart. School Board Member- - Douglas Swasey Being in the greatest District in Utah can amt is difficult at times, but we are here and isn't it great to be able to be part of the best This past year has had its ups and downs, but was a productive year. Children are our future and we are trying sa parenta, administrators, teachers, and patrons to give our children the start they need to compete in the race of life. Itiekindof like the story of the second grader who came home on the first day of school and was asked how he liked school. He said that he didnt like it because lie was just getting good at first grade. We have challenges ahead, but lets take it one day at a time and make the best even better. This year will be great and together we can make it that way. So lets work together. We had a great 1996 and now lets be even better in 1997. , .Th&chiUlrenrar Therefore u&ar&th& bttilderyoftkc' FUTURE School Board Meetings are usually held on the second School Board Member Newell Richens I am striving to make Thursday of each month.
