Show UNION HIGH SCHOOL COMPREHENSIVE The Comprehensive Counseling program et Union High School has developed to the point that it is beginning to really make difference in the education of students. The object of the program is to make counseling part of the cutriculum of the school. Career counseling topics are taken to the students in classes, rather than just meeting with the students that come to a counseling office with questions. We are finding that students are finding more of a purpose tor their schooling when it is related to their life in a direct way through Comprehensive Counseling. One feature of the program is the Comprehensive Counseling computer lab. In this lab, a class of thirty can be taught how to explore careers through the Choices program. They are able to create their own tailor made SEOP specifically relating to their Ugh school experience. For their selected career path, the computer will tell them of the proper courses to lake while at Union High to be prepared to their occupation or further education related to that occupation. A counselor teaches about career, interest and aptitudes, and helps students through this planning process. All students will use the lab, and many will use it more than once. Career classes was another essential component of the program. We oilier a career class for all of the tenth grade students. It is a quarter in length and is scheduled opposite drivers education. The objective is to introduce students to many different occupations in the world of wort We provide other opportunities for instruction in careers through guest visits representing varied occupations, career days, and counselor taught mini classes concerning occupations. Mr. Doug Price coordinates the Comprehensive Counseling program at the school. He is dedicated to the concept of taking counseling to the student rather than having students come ark for it when they feel the need. It is a success and is changing our school in a positive way. APPLIED TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION Jack Bell, Applied Technology Director In todays society, technology is changing at a rapid rate. The role of Applied Technology is to prepare students to enter post secondary educational institutions, ready to receive continued technical training ranging from skill level certifications to advanced degrees. Or secondly, to prepore students to enter toe world of work, reedy and capable to handle the technological challenges and opportunities that await them. Two standards of performance as to the effectiveness of ATE programs have been established. They are 1st, Placement Data on recent graduates and 2nd, Skill Certification for students in various ATE programs. Throughout the year, personnel from the district attempt to contact graduates from Ae previous year in an effort to gather follow up data that can be used to help measure toe effectiveness of local ATE programs. The criteria that is looked for at this time is, did the student enter a post secondary educational institution to receive training related to their high achooi Student Educational Occupational Plan (SEOP), or did they enter a field of employment that was directly related to their high school SEOP? A third criteria is, did Ihe student enter foil time military Beatrice? The placement rate in these three areas for 1999 graduates from Duchesne District was 93 . . The second standard of performance measures the effectiveness of ATE programs by providing students the opportunity to attain skill certification based, as much as possible, on industry standards and needs. These skill certification tests measure competencies ranging from word processing to automotive repair. Iforing the 1999-9- 6 32 school year there were approximately certifications available to students. Students who pass such tests with the required competencies receive a certificate which they can incorporate into their personal portfolios to be used in resumes and job applications. During 1996, 109 - students from Duchesne County School District earned skill certification certificates. Each year, more skills certifications are added to toe list . F.A.C.T J Kin Olsen K-- - 3 & GANG This past year we were able to deplete the last of the buses in our fleet manufactured prior to 1977. All buses manufactured after 1977 meet the requirements for Standard 7, of the Standards for Utah School Bines md Operations handbook. Earlier this year we received a recall notice on the handrails of our buses. Several children in other states caught their jacket strings or other parts of their clothing on the handrails as they exiled toe bus and were injured as the bus pulled away. We have all our buses with the new safer handrails. Aim this year we have implemented a series of four safety meetings (one each term) for our bus drivers. This meets the new federal mandate requirement for our school district. We now have a computer program in which all our bus route maps and other route information cm be accessed from our computer base. This allows us to update and change our maps from our office " of calling the State Office of Education for a copy of the maps, updating and then mailing back the nptowi copy. We received excellent ratings in our last two state safety inspections on our buses in April and October PREVENTION In my program this last year we have been able to certify almost 90 people (teachers, administrators, counselors and personnel from the agencies we have been collaborating in the with) as facilitators SAPStudent Assistance Program.) Of those 50, 11 were certified in toe advanced portion of the program, with another 29 to be trained in December. At present we have over 80 children involved in the SAP groups in the Myton, Neola and East Elementary schools. We are also in the process of starting the SAP program at Union High, Roosevelt Junior High, toe Roosevelt Middle .We have trained personnel at each school site and they are all working towards this program start up in their respective locations. By spring we have in place the PecT Mediation Conflict Management in the schools. This is a program that win enable the students to learn to deal with and mediate their own problems in a controlled and supervised manner, before the situation escalates into a violent one. Ola Latch Key" after school classes have been s success and are continuing this year. These classes are fun, educational opportunities for the children, in an after school setting that is a positive alternative to wandering the streets or being home alone. Also in conjunction with after school activities we (F.A.C.T K-are now basically in charge of the Myton Community Learning Center. The center is providing after school tutoring, peer role modeling, help in getting their homework done, and a snack and a safe place for the children to socialize. The program operates Monday through Thursday, plus 6 weeks in the summer. This j program has increased the skill level of toe children md they are now actually getting homework assignments in on time, thus increasing their GJA.s. Within this last year we have been able to secure over $20,000.00 in grants and donations to run our after school programs. In conjunction with toe after school activities we have been, for ..the last two years, holding multicultural These have had great turnouts and 'evenings. participation from the communities, with numbers over '300 in attendance. - 3) 1996. . SPECIAL EDUCATION Larry Henry sgOisi TaBglpf The Special Education Program is designed to provide school-age- d students who have m educational disability the opportunity to receive a free and appropriate education. This opportunity is based on the students individually determined educational needs. Currently in Duchesne County school about five hundred students are receiving help through toe special education program. The major purpose of toe program is to provide instruction and materials appropriate to a students ability md needs. Often this cm be done through providing small group instruction in the area to the disability such as reading, math, andor social skills. "The mission of the service system for Utah students with disabilities is to empower each individual to be a caring, competent, and contributing citizen in a integrated, diverse, and chmging ociety."(Utah State Board of Education: Special Education Rules, ' 1993) The real goal of special education specifically, and all education generally, is best illustrated by a story that was presented in m inservice to special personnel in January of 1996: The starfish There was a young mm walking down a deserted beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a frail old mm. As he approached toe old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. . . From the Gang Prevention programs we have darted a networking process . with the various agencies, not " only m Duchesne County, but with the entire Uintah Basin. We ire in the process of acquiring monies , .through the House Bill 231. to fond joint venture , projects. .We have witnesses a decrease in the violent activities at Union High with the addition of Wayne EmMeton as toe police officer on duty full lime at this location. He is doing a great job and toe students seem I am also conducting to like having him there. in gang and drag awareness programs community awareness. From the networking we have established Parenting Classes and Schools to Careers, (for programs are starling to provide viable and realistic opportunities for toe students, and our parent involvement is on the increase. . The young nun gazed in wonder as the old mm again and again threw toe small starfish from the sand to the water. He asked, Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of toner The old mm explained that toe stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. "But there must be thousands of beached and millions, of starfish!" Exclaimed the young man. "How cm you make any difference m The old mm looked down at the small starfish in his hand and, as he threw it to the safety of the sea, he said." 1 made a difference to this one." Our purpose then is make a difference to each individual student. |
