Supreme Court The act was sought by coalition of faiths, including the LDS Church, and was cosponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch, It requires a "compelling h. interest government for authorities to infringe on religious expression. In the Beaver County case, the Immanuel Foundation wants more than $2 million in damages for its June 24 eviction from a fenced 640-acr- e endave at Vanes Springe, 40 miles west of Milford, Six adults and sn infant were escorted off the ranch by the Beaver County sheriff after refusing to pay property taxes since moving then to establish a "religious retreat" in 1986. The group has refused to register with the state of Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exem- religious organisation, explaining it docent need government approval to worship. A Nevada company bought the ranch from tax sale the county as a past-du- e in 1993, but foundation members refilaed to vacate until they wen forcibly removed from the property by Beaver County deputies in June. In two nearly identical lawsuits, foundation official Dwight fuchse writes in court documents that he "holds a sincere rehgioua belief that the state of Utah government and its county ubdi virions are part of Babylon.1 ie "where any government authority to enforce king craft or is enforcing wicked laws of tyranny upon the people known as the Babylon holds hamman nerd," "Hughes writes. He said that with tha county forcibly evicting him from holy ground to rinflil society, he now frees damnation. With vsrious twists, the foundation argument of retigi freedom has been tha earns in seven federal lawsuits the group has filed in UJB. District Court since February 1994 over the remote ranch . property. Group members, none of them lieaneed by the Utah Bar, act aa their own attorneys in filing oourt documenta that an appeals judge once characterised as "a mishmash of legalisms. The foundstion lost its first five federal lawsuits, and the two current casts were referred by district judges to UJB.
