Three-tim- e state champions are at "Wrestling "Major Items Powerhouses such as Uintah and Delta, but a few years ago I watched Duchesnes Brandon Moat become a "Quadruple State Champion". He won slate, mat crowns as a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior, but he wasnt done as he won two state cross country championships and four stale track tillcs(polc vault, twice; 1600 and 3200 runs). In the 1980s Shawn Cuch came close to becoming the first "Three-Tim- e Mat Champion" at Union, but he just missed. He won titles as a sophomore and junior. However, he eiftled up second his senior year. Travis Marx became the first ever "Three Time-Staat Champ" Union when he took first in 1996. He won crowns as a sophomore, junior and senior. He is now wrestling at Ricks College. The first "Twins" I watched play sports were the "Walker Doubles" from Uintah-Rob- ert and Richard. They were members of the Uintah High School basketball team that won the Class B State Title in 1967 under the direction of Doug Moon, who recently retired from Uintah. Uintahs "Double Hoopsters" were identical twins, who scored almost at will. One of the twins was the better of the two, and sometimes he got in foul trouble. I always figured those twins just changed uniforms and solved the "Foul Problem". I doubt the Walkers did the old "Switcheroo", te HOW DO YOUR VIEWS COMPARE TO THOSE Chris Cannon and Bill Orton? of Issues Test. were On asked to take this Congressional Once you take the test, compare the results to help you decide who to vote the previous page you for on November 5th. Over the years, "Nielsen", "Nielson" and "Nelson" have been popular girls' basketball names at Union High School, and I swear I was "Seeing Double". Jeanie Nielsen, Julie Nielsen, Jenni Nielson and Jolene Nelson were all members of the Union team that ended up second when they lost to Pine View on a last season bucket in 1995. Union won its first ever girls' state basketball championship in 1986 and once again, was popular. Suzie Nielsen, a tall center, guided Union ' to die title, but Kathy Nielsen and Suzy Nielson were on the team. The Cougars also placed second a couple of years earlier in 1984. S. Nielsen and K. Nielsen were sophomores. However, they werent the only "Nielsens" on the squad as there were twins, Sherrie and Shirley Nielsen. Next on my "Twin Agenda" are the "Green Ones". Mari and Michelle werent "Green just had the last name of "Green". They played basketball for Uintah more than ten years ago. The "Green Girl Hoopsters" were of the "Identical Type", and I was a sports photographer for the were local newspaper. They practically impossible to "Tell Apart" and I believe Loa Kay Bowthorpe, who was the head coach at Uintah at that time, had them wear "Different Colored Socks" for identification purposes. I also kept track ' of their numbers, but if I couldnt not the numeral I would just say: "Green Takes A Shot or Green Makes A Pass, etc." I didnt want to give one "Green" the wrong first name because they might "Turn Red With Embarrassment Over The Error" or maybe run over me when I behind a basket and make me turn "Black and Blue"! They were both small girls, who could hit the long bomb and dribbled well. The 'Green Girls" weren't "Yellow" as they constantly refused to back down from larger opponents, who were sometimes "Green With Envy" over the Greens basketball talent. Sometimes a fan gets "Double His Sports Fun", but when "Nielsens, Nielsons and Nelsons" are involved it is "Quadruple Entertainment Tunes Two Plus "NielsenyNiclson" "-- they . One"! All-Sta- te 3-- ' Pheasant and quail hunt forecast Pheasant hunters in northern, central and northeastern Utah should epjoy a better hunt than last year, when Utahs general pheasant season opens Nov. 2. Utahs general pheasant season runs Nov. 2 17 through much of Region. An open winter meant good survival of birds in northern Utah. Good residual cover and just enough spring moisture to preclude itch bank burning, combined with early summer rain, that delayed hay mowing until the later half of hatching, resulted in improved nest success and chick survival. The same conditions are found in central and northeastern Utah and hunter success should be better in all three areas this year, compared with 1995. There are noticeably more lards than two to three years ago. Hunting will be spotty in southern and southeastern Utah, where drought conditions have hindered reproduction. over-wint- -- the state. In 1995, 14 PHUs in Utah were open to public hunting. Some PHUs open with mourning dove seasons in September. To allow for late season partridge hunting, some stay open through the end of January. . |
