Show I June 4. : 1996- - Page fi 11 (Basin Life Uintah Basin Standard j Nero, the drug sniffing dog takes a big bite out of crime County Sheriffs Department is very at sniffing out and good apprehending criminals and drugs. Robert Roth, a Uintah County Sheriffs deputy and Nero's handler old black German says the Shepherd is just "one of his kids," but to criminals he is a 75 pound By Cheryl Mecham Most people are intimidated by Nero, as well they should be, if they walk on the wrong side of the law, because Nero, a dual trained police dog owned by the Uintah torpedo, with a nose that will find its target every time. Nero has logged over 1,000 hours of dual training, involving search and apprehension and detection of four illegal substances: marijuana, cocaine, methamphctamine and heroin. In every instance Nero's acute sense of smell actually detects "odor the substance, rather Roth explained. Nero has the busiest nose in the Basin. "When an agency calls for our assistance, we respond, said Roth. Last week the two traveled to Roosevelt where Nero performed a locker search for drugs at Roosevelt Junior High School by request of principal J.D. Mitchell. None were found, and with Neros amazing canine nose, estimated to have sensitivity 6 million times stronger than that of a human, it is safe to say that there were no drug odors in the lockers searched. Remarkably Nero's intensive training has taught him to isolate odors, making it impossible for drug odors to be masked by more pungent smells such as coffee grounds, or petroleum products, favorite masking materials used by drug traffickers. In the three years since Nero has served with the sheriff's department he has made many successful finds, Roth said. Two of the more difficult discoveries included Nero's find of marijuana in a safe hidden under a pile of dirty clothes in a closet, and successfully tracking a suspect fleeing from the scene of a highspeed chase who was lying in a canal of water with only his nose exposed. Nero's expertise allows law enforcement officials to find "probable cause needed to get a judges okay to obtain a search warrant. Sometimes all officers need to proceed with a search is based on the strength of the dogs positive "aggressive indications," Roth said, manifested by barking, or scratching at the odor. Each year Nero performs his skills under the scrutiny of the Utah Police Academy to meet certification requirements in Salt Lake City. The testing proves the canine as well as the handler, can meet each aspect of canine law enforcement work. The sheriff's department obtained Nero from a kennel in Riverside, California, unique to breeding and training of law enforcement animals. Before receiving the dog Roth was required to train with Nero for three months. During that time Roth learned verbal commands in Czechoslovakian to prevent suspects from controlling the dog, and handling skills and methods to continue Neros training. Roth and Nero are partners, and Nero is protected under the same laws as any other law enforcement officer in the nation, with the same criminal penalties in force against violators. a dual trained law enforcement dog, owned READY TO PLAY-Nc- ro, by the Uintah County Sheriffs Department looks to Sheriffs Deputy Robert Roth for commands. Over the winter months he estimates he worked between 200 -- 300 hours on the project. From the very beginning Lindsay said he was "impressed with the workmanship of the wood and iron, They dont build stuff like that anymore, he explained. He molded iron as blacksmiths of old with a forge, owned by Will Jessen of Bonita. Sometimes, he welded using "the modem method." He made brakes and gears and brackets. The old wagon wheels needed new spokes and fellows (a steel rim around outer edge of wheel) which Lindsey ordered out of North Dakota. One of the last steps involved ordering six wooden bows to support the canvas cover, which was 'custom made by a lady in Evanston, Wyoming. All the dollars and cents to reconstruct the old wagon into a functional as well as beautiful one cost approximately How does one go about stepping backwards in time? That question may best be answered by three couples from Tabiona who are preparing to join Utahs Centennial Wagon Train on June 4 to embark on a 446 mile journey from Logan to Cedar City. For the past few months Dale and Linda Gines, Max and Veola Gines, Darrel and DeEtfa Casper have been busily preparing for the trip and during the process theyve learned first-han-d about their new mode of transportation, the Conestoga wagon. vehicles Unlike modem-da- y advertised on every city block, wagons are hard to come by, and unless carefully preserved, are rarely found in sound condition. Tabiona homesteaders such as Jepp Thomas, depended on wagons to transport themselves and their goods to and from their property. His daughter, Linda Gines knew two wagons remained on the old $3,000-4,00-0. Most people would agree that homestead, which she turned over to Charlie Lindsay, of Talmage, remaking a Conestoga wagon offering to trade him one rtf the old would be a lot of work, and it was, Lindsay admits, yet he says, "It wagons to reconstruct the other.' Lindsay, a dairy farmer with 20 was very enjoyable ... Im ready to years of welding experience build another one. And so he will, eagerly took on the task. He (me down and one to go.
