Show Education DES teachers participate in Rural School Workshop WORKSHOP PARTIGPANTS -- Local school employees participated in a faculty planning session at a workshop held August 23 at the Pinnacles. Teachers and staff planned for the school year during the session. Seventeen staff numbers from Duchesne Elementary School attended the "Rural School WorksCedar City July 13, 14 hop"-in and 15. This was made passible 2with funding from the Duchesne County School District with money from a special tax to be used for training teachers. There were two general sessions each day, and the rest of the time was spent in breakout sections where the participants could choose the topic in which they were most interested. Sane of the topics were reading, math, computers, positive thinking, assessment and many others. The topics from the genera f t sessions were: 'Community Involve-mefrom the PTA; Teachers for the 21st Century, by Trscey Bailey, the 1993 National Teacher of the cott Bean, Utah State Year; Superintendent of Schools, talked nf about the role of teachers; and Neila Conners, whose topic was BEING TESTED-Testi- ng begins early in the year for elementary students. A small group of students at East Elementary School is being tested to help determine reading skill retention from last spring. How to Teach with Passion.' Neila Conners emphasized changing the "ducks who quack at every suggestion and change to positive educators who teach with passion and enthusiasm. A follow-u- p workshop was held August 23 at the Pinnacles where teachers shared ideas and set goals . and programs for the 1994-9- 5 school year. Reading was targeted as the number one emphasis with a contest starting August 29 and going throughout the year. Each month a different class will be in charge of the reading activity for the month. During the workshop it wss felt that students should keep more portfolios for the parents to observe their student work and progress. It was also emphasised that the positive be stressed this year with no failing grades unless absolutely the last resort. Teachers should teachers tried their skill at rope TAKING A BREAK-Seve- ral a across a river swinging during break at a workshop for school teachers held August 23 at the Pinnacles. avoid "put downs" and show enthusiasm for teaching. Teachers should "pump each other up" and help each other use the four "Le" in teaching. They are "Live, Love, Learn and Lighten Up," with much emphasis placed on making school more fun. With this philosophy DuchesNe Elementary is creating a "Wall of Fame" where different activities will be spotlighted each month with grade level winners. The students name and scare will remain posted until replaced the fallowing year by a similar activity. The activities chosen for the 1994-- 95 school year are: Paper Airplane Flying, Jacks, Checkers, Basketball, Art and the Scholastic Bowl. These activities will be extracurricular with most of the practice and competition taking plan after or before school. Also some ofthese activities are "old time games" which many of our students do not know. Teachers hope to eliminate some of the "couch potatoes" by teaching them new, fun games. Many of these programs and activities will be discussed with the parents during the foil. They will also be implemented with the students on all levels during the 1994-9- 5 school year.
