Utahni at greatest riak ere tried to quit in 1991, according to a survey conducted by the Utah Department of Health. Fifty-on- e percent of the current smokers interviewed said they had quit fir me day or longer during the previous year. The data ware collected by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System monthly telephone survey. The margin of error is plus or minus three percent BRFSS data collected from 1985 to 1990 showed there was no increase or decrease in the number cf smokers in Utah. According to the Bureau ofHealth Promotions "Utah Trend Report on Smoking'1 an average of 16 percent of all adults 18 years of age and older were current smokers during those years. A 'current smoker is someone who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes and who currently smokes. "We have almost reached the Healthy People 2000 abjective for moking prevalence of 15 percent," said Christine Chalkley, program specialist. The challenge remains to reach heavy amokere. Challdey says the Smoking TVend Report will help design programs by identifying key factors among amokere, such as gender, education level and age. For example the report found that females were lees likely to smoke were age 25 through 59. AdulU with lew than a high echool diploma or GED were three timee mors likely to smoke. Chalkley said that an individuals derision to smoke involves a complex anortment of pqydidagScd, eodolog-icand possibly biological factors. "We take an these factors into account said Chalkley, "to design programs that will help Utahns to stop smoking. A variety of department and other excellent smoking cessation programs are available throughout the state at low cast The departments 1998 nicotine patch project had a tremendous response. During the first 24 hours after Turn off the Violence, part of Family Week al announcing tiie withdrawal program, more than 1,100 people called a toll-fr- ee number for more information. "It is dear that amokere want to quit and are looking for help," said Chalkley. . Other department priorities Include preventing young people from storting smoking, enforcing tobacco laws, reducing youth access to tobacco, tobacco cessation programs for youth, and informing the public about the dangers of environmental tobacco smoke. Chalkley encourages the public to call for more information about any of these programs. Affordable NEW FACTORY DIRECT MATTRESSES! W! November Brown, giri. November Haslem, girl. The theme of Utah Family Week ia to encourage Utah families to be responsible for their television and movie viewing. to Tibby Milne, According executive director, Utah Council for Crime Prevention, many people in todays society view violence as a way to deal with strong emotions, resolve conflicts and pun power. The increase of violence and crime in Utah's schools and neighborhoods is epidemiq, eft d it .reflects the influence of entertainment, in rid its forms, which is inundated with violence. The Utah Council for Crime Prevention has joined with the Utah PTA to launch a campaign to "Turn Off The Violence" during Utah Family Week. Governor Leavitt,' in a public service message supporting Utah Family Week and "Turn OfTDie Violence," ia encouraging families to be more responsible about exposing their children to excessive violence and asking people to reduce the amount of graphic, violent entertainment coming into the home. According to Mrs. Milne, by the time children reach teen years, they have seen 200,000 acts of violence on TV alone, including 18,000 simulated murders. This figure does not include- violence or murders seen in movies, videos or video gamei.' Research haa shown that viewing repeated violence has s marked effect on the attitudes of young people about violent acts. entertainment media can sell products and change the market place through advertising, Milne said, "think what its doing to our attitudes concerning violence, ia time to make violence in entertainment leas profitable, and people can do that fay making it leaa popular she said. "One thing everyone can do is turn it off! This is not censorship, it is free choice.
