A number of housing developments are located west of the school whereas in the past most homes were to the east. "By installing a sidewalk we will try to provide a better place for students to walk. Many have had to walk in the barrow pits or along side the highway or ditches," Hancock said. The grant was originally applied fa- by Roorevelt City last summer and City officials were recently notified that they had been awarded the sidewalk funding. Sidewalk to be built west of RJH school By Aldan Radicle Roosevelt City has qualified for a $6,000 grant from the Depart- ment of Transportation under its Sidewalk Safety Program. The City will use matching funds of approximately $3,000 to construct a sidewalk west and south of Roosevelt Junior High School, which will follow along the Neola Highway. "We will build the sidewalk as far as the funds provided will allow us," stated Brad Hancock, Roosevelt City Administrator. The prqject will begin after school is out next summer and funds from the Department of Transportation will be awarded once the work is concern for over 30 years. The Neola Highway (State Road 121), Hancock Cove road west of the school and 200 North, which is located south, receive heavy traffic. Parents of Indian children attended the meeting to give their input about all children in the district receiving equal education opportunities and having equal rights. Mower asked for public input after Thompson gave a brief explanation of the law and its background. This money is generated from students living on lands that are exempt from property tax. This money is then placed into the general Maintenance and Operation budget to benefit all students. The question about using this money to provide special programs for the Indian students was raised. It was explained that property taxes paid by local citizens goes into the general funds to benefit all children and this money should be used the same way. Parents made comments about the drop-ou- t rate of Indian students at Union High. Possible causes and solutions were briefly discussed. There were former Union High Indian students then who shared their experiences at UHS. The low reading skills of Indian students at UHS was another concern brought up. Other problems brought up were the involvement of Indian parents in the Myton area, the need to increase the number of Indian employees in the district, and possible training topics for district employees including child abuse and Fetal Alcohol Effects. my Meril-ynn- Swasey, Coers, Cornene Hackett.
