The bill overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 396 to 30. "This bill was a compromise between the Congress and the President which helps the truly needy in Utah and across the nation, while avoiding any increase in the federal deficit; such bills are rare in Congress," Orton stated. The measure, H.R. 3575, provides a minimum of six weeks of supple mental benefits for workers who have exhausted their regular compensation. Under the bill, the number of additional weeks a worker may extend benefits will vary from state to state, based upon each staters unemployment rate. The bill will provide extended benefits to the unemployed until July of 1992. "With winter and the holidays approaching, it is appropriate to assist the long-terunemployed in Utah. Of course, the best medicine for unemployment is employment. However, with the economy still lagging, we need to help our fellow Utahns through the hard times," Orton stated. m vat ' .. . wi v . ivrawff? R.S.
