Bench, associate dean in the Utah State University College of Education, will receive the 1989 E. G. Peterson Extension Award, given each year to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to USU Extension. Bench will receive the award at USUs commencement June 3. Vamell epitomizes the cooperative aspects ofwhat continuing education is in terms of producing outreach education for the people of Utah, said R. Paul Larsen, vice president of USU Extension. He truly works in the spirit of the land-grainstitution, of which there was no greater advocate than E. G. Peterson, for whom the award was named." Peterson, president of the USU from 1916 to 1945, was the first director of Utah States Cooperative Extension Service, which this year is commemorating its 75th anniversary. Bench, who is also an associate professor in the USU Secondaiy Education Department, joined USU in 1975 as director of the USU Education Center in Roosevelt, a position he held until 1981. During that time he reorganized the center, and student enrollment increased fourfold. Under Vamells administration, the Uintah Basin Education Center became the flagship center for USU, said Rex Tueller, assistant vice president for extension and dean of continuing education. From 1981 to 1983, Bench was director of training and acting party chief for the USU extension outreach project in Somalia East several successful graduate academic and endorsement programs statewide. When I travel the state, and topics of issues arise related to USU extension classes or programs, outreach education, technology for distance learning or meeting rural needs, Varnells name is invariably mentioned, Ballam said. Benchs accomplishments are many. He developed Utahs academic olympiad, which challenges the academic skills of high school students from Utah and Idaho. He has developed team teaching models that are used nationwide as well as nationally recognised career education programs. Bench received his BS, MS and PhD from Utah State University. Before joining USU, he taught social studies at Wahlquist Junior High in Ogden, and was assistant principal and principal at South Ogden Junior High. He also served as a consultant for school districts in Kansas, Canada, Arizona and on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, and was curriculum director for the Weber School District Bench and his wife, Dalene, live in Logan. They have two daughters and two sons. Since returning from Somalia, he has coordinated and other continuing education programs as associate dean for extension and outreach programs in the USU college of education. With 48 seniors graduating; 44 attended the party that Duchesne graduates of the class of 89 will cherish as safe, fun, and memorable. Evelyn Ivie and children, Grand Junction, visited with Dortha Ivie last week. Kent and Terisena Ivie, Roosevelt, spent Memorial Day with Dortha. Memorial Day weekend visitors at the home of Ruth Murray were Mr. and Mrs. Mac Murray, Sandy; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Myer, Salt Lake; granddaughter, Christi, Dallas and Martha Murray; Jeffery Murray of U of U and fiance, Erin Trenbeth, Salt Lake; Clifford Murray and family, Roosevelt, and Tammy Murray. An organizational meeting for the Myton Daze event, to be held June 23 and 24, was held June 7 at the city office, undo direction of Gayla Heckathom. He reported his mission Sunday, June 11 in Tridell. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wilson and son, Warrin, went to Logan last week to attend the college graduation exercises for Joycina Wilson. They also visited their daughter, Bonnie, and family in Clarkston. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Wallace have anew son bom May 25 at the Duchesne County Hospital. He weighed 6 lbs. 1 oz., and will be. named Andrew John. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Woollard and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Wallace.' Funeral services were held in Tridell May 30 for Newell Seth McKee, 69, of Phoenix. He died May 23 in Arizona. Additional services were held May 27 in Phoenix. He was buried in Tridell. Elder Lester Bartlett, has been called to be the district leader in the Florida, Tampa mission. Visiting at the DeVon McKee home Memorial Day were Mr. and Mrs. DeVear Ross, Salt Lake, and Orinda and Harold Gee, Duchesne. Visiting at the home of Thelma Taylor during the Memorial weekend were Shayne McKee, Victorville, Calif.; Terry McKee, Hesperia, Calif.; and Joleen Cozart and four children, Albuquerque. Joleen and family will remain a month to visit her mother. Mr. and Mrs. Reed McKee, Calif., were visitors last week in TridelL They came to attend the funeral of Reeds brother, Newell. The Lon Brinkerhoff family have moved from Tridell to the Maeser area. Lons mother, Mrs. Brinkerhoff, is visiting with the Brinkerhoff family now. She is from St George. Reid and Joella Goodrich and family, Arco, Idaho, are visiting in Tridell. Tridell students graduating from Uintah High School were Jason Goodrich, Ann Marie Goodrich, Russell McKee, Colleen Woollard, Aaron Wallace and Kelly Harvey. Kristin and Trevor McKee graduated from Union High School. Those graduating from West Junior High School were Sharia Haslem, Brandy Natani, Juliene Harvey, Jared Wallace, ChristoVan-derhoo- full-lin- Ron Craig Addley, son of Ronald and Rogean Addley, Duchesne, has been named valedictorian of his graduating class in the Utah State University college of natural resources. Craig earned a 4.0 grade point average during his entire undergraduate studies at USU, according to his advisor, John Kadlec. Addley received his bachelor of science degree in fisheries and wildlife at commencement June 3. Lorene Siddoway, Vale, Oregon; Lynn McKee, Boise; Viola Munk, Ontario, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Morrill, Pueblo, Great books training to be offered in Salt Lake City The Great Books Foundation, a d nonprofit educational organization, announced that registrations are being accepted for a basic leader training course scheduled in Salt Lake July 19 and 20. The course, one of 700 the foundation offers annually across the country, prepares teachers, volunteers, librarians, and school administrators to lead junior great books reading and discussion groups. The course is also open to those who plan to lead Chicago-base- . adult great books groups in their communities. The junior great books program, available for grades two through twelve, is designed to teach students how to interpret what they read. Students learn how to think independently about literature, to articulate ideas about its meaning, and to enrich their ideas through discussion.
