Sifi Bennett teaches classes to children not for fighting purposes, but for self confidence and discipline. There have been several studies that indicate better study habits after lessons, he said. The kids are very impressionable. They really look up to martial arts teachers. The students, both young and old, are taught to focus on the mental aspect of Gung Fu. Its important that they concentrate on what theyre doing at that very moment and on the many forms and techniques that are taught Theres a misconception sometimes when people watch Gung Fu in movies, said Sifi Bennett They don't see the concentration, character building and meditation. The teachers interest in Gung Fu began as a child at the movie theatre, The hens always won and took care of themselves, he said. That impressed me. Although some enjoy the mystery martial arts tend to create, Sifi Bennett teaches openly and honestly. The students must learn the basics by repetition and adhere to the rules. In the studio no cussing; gum diewing; eating or unnecessary conversation is allowed. Students must respect higher ranking students and should bow at the studio entrance upon entering or leaving the workout room. The Chen Wuan form is a Chinese style, said Sifi Bennett. Chinese is a soft style. It's more of a mental procees, with a flowing motion. This style copies and simulates animal moves. Although violence is not encouraged in students, ancient masters learned from watching animals fight- - Their forms copy the leopard, tiger, mantis, dragon, eagle, crane, monkey, snake, bear and cobra. Sifi Bennett watched people in Japan involved in martial arts, during a mission. Thats part of the reason for my dedication, he said. He has studied for the last nine years with Sifi Kent Mortimer and now teaches Chen Wuan Gung Fu to others. But there are many different types in martial arts. Besides the Chinese style there is also Korean and Japanese. Korean uses power and high kicks while Japanese looks for more power in one punch and more physical strength. There is the soft style of Chinese then the hard style of Japanese, Sifi Bennett said. Then there are hundreds of styles in between. The students in his classes have plenty of enthusiasm for the form they are studying. I love it, said Steve Hadlock one of the students who have studied the longest under Sifi Bennett. "Theres a lot of mental discipline and a lot to remember. Hadlock, who is 19 years old, joined the classes three years ago with encouragement from his mother. Now he practices four nights a week at the studio and enters competition at tournaments. At the 1989 Tournament of Champions, he took fourth in Brown Belt Kata or form. You dont have to fight, but its nice to know you can, just in case, said Hadlock who is one belt away from a black belt Ranking in Gung Fu starts with the yellow belt, then the orange belt, purple belt, blue belt, green belt, brown belt, second YOUNG MINDS CONCENTRATE-Studc- nts at the Live and Kickin' Martial Arts Studio in Roosevelt concentrate on the lessons from teacher Fred Bennett. brown belt and black . belt The part time teacher. Theyll have smaller classes compared to big colleges that have 300 students a class, he said. Sometimes its hard for students from rural areas to jump right into a large college. Their chance of survival is doubled by choosing a smaller school to start with. There is a 30 percent drop out rate in college because they start with big The new Utah State University Education Center may be able to provide junior college capabilities in the next few years, said Alva Snow, chairman of the USU Building Committee and one of the founding fathers of the center. We need to encourage students out of high school to think about going to school here for one or two years, he said. Last year we graduated 553 students last year and enrolled 30 to 40 in USU education. The center will be near completion in three weeks and officials hope to have USU graduation ceremonies in April there. A dedication will be held in June or July. The benefits of the center will be those of a junior college, said Snow. Students will be able to schools. A position will soon be advertized for a counselor and student affairs advisor. The new faculty, member will organize student activities and social recreation. We hope to have studentbody elections to get the kids involved, Snow said. When I went to Dixie in the 1930s, its facilities were like the ones we have here. The cost of sending a student off to college can also be decreased by keeping him or her in the area, said Snow. We asked people at USU what it would cost to send a student there and with room, board and tuition it would be 6,500 a year. At home there is little extra coat save daily trans- portation. The USU education system in the Basin is also helpful with the concurrent enrollment, which is a program that toadies college subjects to high school seniors. Its an advantage because the child saves the school system one year and gets a head start, said Snow." The USU center will include laboratories, computer rooms, a bookstore, student lounge and multi purpose room, besides classrooms and offices. those cars! Roosevelt City crews are finding it difficult to do a thorough snow removal job, with numerous vehicles parked on die streets. City officials are once again requesting that residents remove all vehicles from city streets, as the snow plows have to go out around anything on the street, making a dean sweep impossible. In some jdaces, the plowed area is barely wide enough for two cars because of this problem. The admonition is accompanied by this warning: offenders may not find their vehicles where they left them, as city ordinances allow for towing at owner's expense of any RV, boat, or vehicle 24 hours after notice is given.
