About 30 people were present Thursday, as Norman Davis, English professor at the USU Education Center, guided the discussion through the elements of nature and the wilderness itself, the similes and metaphors reigning in descriptive paragraphs that brought the early American fron- found in the pages of the book, though not identified by her own name, but a personality named Lena. And Cather indicates in her 7-1- versus the people is a theme that carries through My Antonia, as well as the other selections of this series. As Davis pointed out, western writers often entered an clement of struggle into their stories, bringing the reader to a keen awareness of the power of nature and his powerlessness to alter its course. Book group participants often set aside the events and details of the story to interject personal experiences that parallelled those in the book, reminding everyone how common is the entire human experience. The author herself is First Birthdays Bohemian girl named Antonia lasted through to hie adulthood. Professor Davis, while drawing themes and messages from other books in addition to the one at hand, encouraged discussion on an unexpected theme as well: the comparison of Antonia to the mythological heroheroine, whose life sequences seemed to follow a pattern that directed them to something higher than mortality. Stressing that the book is actually more novel than romance, he nevertheless managed to point out the certain elements of the mythic that are enigmatically woven into the fabric of the tale. The character of the book itself was artfully compared by one participant to the skills of an artist: Any artist can portray young as old; only the best can see the beauty in file old to portray them as young.
