You may have a tax refund coming The Internal Revenue Service has 467 refund checks worth SIHL.OOO which were returned by tlie Postal Service as undeliverable and are unclaimed by local residents and businesses. According to Carol M. Fay, District Director of the Salt Lake City District Office, the taxpayers may have moved or changed their last names during the year and failed to notify the IRS. Sometimes the handwriting on the tax return may simply be illegible. The best way. to avoid misdirected refund checks is to use the peel-of- f label found in the tax package. When a refund is returned by the Postal Service, the IRS attempts to find the taxpayer and deliver the checks, hut there are always some who cannot be found, according to Fay. Taxayers who are expecting a refund ami have moved or changed their name during the year are encouraged to contact the IRS. They can write to Internal Revenue Service, Attention: Service, Taxpayer 465 South fourth east. Salt Like City, Utah 84111. Taxpayers listed below should call the IRS at to claim their refund. Srherb, Barry Reynolds Shannon, Larena Sorenson Sharp, see an increase in depression, suicide, and alcohol and drug abuse," says Carter. "It happens every year. It will happen again this year." There are three main reasons, according to Carter. The abuse of alcohol or drugs seems to be more acceptable during the holidays. This may be all right for some people but for the person who suffers from an addictive disease, it is an invitation for disaster. Secondly, there is the expectation that life is supposed to be better because of the holidays. This isn't always true, especially if alcohol or drugs are a problem for a family. The pressure to be extra joyuous can be a killer. Thirdly, alcohol or drug abuse causes people to isolate themselves and withdraw, even if only in their own minds. Seeing other people having a good time together can make people feel sorry for themselves. Lambourne, Samuel G. Deed and y Margaret Oshel, Norma F. McEnel-lJohn E. Johnson, Thomas 0. and Christel C. "People come to our aftercare meetings or they call the Helpline and say that their family is falling apart, their job is in danger and they have nothing to be thankful for on Thanksgiving." "If alcohol or drugs play a part in their problems, we can begin to help them turn their thinking around at Highland Ridge Hospital's 24 hour Helpline. "Alcoholism and drug dependency are progressive illnesses. In most cases, people reach out for help before they have lost everything. Often family members reach out first and we can intervene in an alcoholic's drinking before it is too late." Carter says I've never met anyone, who didn't have something to be thankful for. The key is to get a dialogue started.
