You've also no doubt heard about Benjamin Franklins desire to have the turkey, instead of the eagle, as the national symbol. Well, here is a consumer's guide to frivolous facts about the festive fowl. This year you too can astound your friends with these arcane but true tidbits of trite turkey trivia: Question: Do turkeys have anything to do with the country of Turkey? Answer: Legend has it that although there have always been wild turkeys in North America, the domestic turkey was developed in Europe. As it was being refined, it did pass through the country of Turkey and may have picked up the name there. Incidentally, in Turkey (the country), turkey (the main course) is called hindi. Question: Are turkeys really as dumb as everyone says? Answer: Domestic turkeys have been known to drown in a rainstorm or trample each other to death rushing to one comer of their pen. However, you should remember that most turkeys become menu items when they are only 1 weeks old. So they are similar to adolescents of the human world in that they are just young and prone to unpredictable behavior. Question: Has a turkey ever run a marathon? Answer: No, but each year Cuero, Texas, plays host to the Great Gobbler Gallop. The race consists of a sprint for gobblers. Last year the winner achieved a speed of nearly 17 miles per hour. 18-2- 120-yar- d Question: What do turkeys eat for Thanksgiving? Answer: Assuming that they are not looking out from the inside of a roasting pan on the big day, domesticated turkeys eat a complex computerized diet of com and soybeans supplemented with vitamins and minerals. Wild turkeys, however, don't eat so high on the hog. They seem to get by on acorns, cram and soybeans left over in farmers' fields, insects (especially Page 19 NOTE: The STANDARD wishes lo thank Barbara B. Mathis. Question: Has a human ever been attacked by a turkey? Answer: Although the revenge motive is definitely there, the answer is "no." However, a man in Windham, Ohio, got his name in the news when he was charged with assulting his brother-in-lawith a frozen turkey. Question: Is it tough being born a turkey? Answer: Yes. Mother turkeys have a nasty habit of standing up when they lay eggs. Turkey producers try to counter this by adding cushioning materials to the laying cages, but many a prospective bird still bites the dust when mother turkey bombs away." Question: Do female turkeys (hens) have more breast meat than male (tom) turkeys? Answer: If compared at the same age, hens tend to have slightly mors breast meat than toms. Toms, however, are allowed to fatten up a bit longer before being sent to market, so by the time you pick one up at your local supermarket, the toms are the ones with slightly more breast meat.
