Show T i V i UINTAH BASIN STANDARD, November 25. 1987, Computers help State taxes The Utah State Tax Commis sion is Installing a new computer system to handle the over 600,000 individual state income tax returns processed annually. The new system will be in place by January November 6, 1987, will be delayed since they must be recorded on the new system. All transactions will be recorded with the actual postmark date or when delivered to the Tax Commission. This will be done during December, 1987, said "The new system will be housed state's IBM main frame computer and will greatly expand the system's storage and processing capabilities," said Lee Shaw, community relations director. "The Tax Commission literally outgrew the old system. We simply ran out of computer space to record and maintain the over 600,000 records for the three to five years Shaw. 4. 1988. "Not all individual income tax file information will be readily available through the Tax Commission's Taxpayer Services Unit during this transition period," said Shaw. Our staff will be able to call up on the computer tax information made through October 23, 1987, but anything entered into the system after that date will have to be manually retrieved and reveiwed with the taxpayer until the new system is fully up and operational on January 4, 1988." There will be direct benefits to the taxpayer with the new computer system: faster response to tax inquiries and more information available to the taxpayer. In addition, since the new system will be able to receive data automatically from the IRS, Utahns will no in the the water on this tank is not from a rainstorm. The temperatures, ' however, will be colder Thursday through the i weekend, with highs dropping from the low 40s to the 30s, and lows dipping from the 20s even down into the '.r i teens by Friday morning. No all required to adequately provide -- Weather taxpayer services and support," he said. With the implementation of the new computer system, the old computer system is being phased out. November 6, 1987, will be the last day that returns, adjustments or refunds will be issued on the old system. Because of the change over, i1 transactions that occur after Page 3 longer need to attach the federal returns to the their state income tax returns. There will be more information on this in the state income tax booklets to be mailed in December, 1987. After January 4, 1988, the income tax processing system will be more completely automated with less manual labor. Manual examinations and audits will .be greatly reduced. The committee began gearing up for the next phase of its operations, with cooperation from school officials, law enforcement officials, local government representatives, community members and the media in efforts to gather all possible information and suggestions for dealing with the problems. Efforts are also being made to acquire matching funds for the money left over from the stoplight drive to increase the resources available fraction. The group is also exploring other assistance that's available in state and governmental resources. Flora Allred, Fund President wanted to thank the community overagain, for it's speedy and whelming response to the groups efforts and asked those who had other concerns or felt that they could offer information or suggestions on possible solutions to contact the committee. We want to use the money weve collected wisely and correct where ever possible other "danger zones" that put our children at risk, she explained. 4 t r j i Open Late Friday Night And Pixy Will Be In The Roosevelt Store 10 A.M.-- 7 P.M.
