Show Paqt 16. March 18. 1987 Education Standard dJJihtah IBasin Altamont places fourth in state The Altamont Forenaie team returned home from state finals with fourth place finish Saturday. However, there was some about some of the placing. Forensics teacher, Diane Giles, said the students did well, but they want to do better next year. "Well just have to work harder," she said. The team had traveled to Snow College to the meet Giles said she thought there were some problems eon--trove- with the judging. "When one judge places a parson fourth and another places him tenth in the same competition, there is something wrong somewhere. She said students at the college do most of the judging and may or may not be qualified to critique the events. Hunter education to compete in April .SPELLING WINNERS Roosevelt many winners in their first district tion. The winners Middle school had spelling bee competi- include, Marcy Brittni Phouthavongsay, Chelsea Flowe, Rachael McGrow, Cami Wood, Ruth Hackford, Farah Fergusen, Shimayne Weight, Nathan Olsen, Gabe Reynolds and Emily Lemon. Kari McKee and Jeena Malnar are not pictured but went to the competition as alternates. Zufelt, Hyder, Saori LeAnn Phouthavongsay, Clark Timothy, Randy Provistgaard, Union, Duchesne split computer fair and Union High Duchesne Schools split most of the honors in the District computer Fair held last Jr. High. week at Roosevelt Chairman of the event was Steve Aycock of Duchesne High SchooL Students from around the district traveled to Roosevelt to compete in the areas of programming and program display. On the high school level. Union and Duchesne split wins. In beginning programming, however, Altamont slid Tabiona tied for first. 'Scott Maxwell from Tabby and Devin Mitchell from Altamont tied. Second place Tabionaa Joseph Silver took second. Stuart Jones and Erie Fausett tied for third place. Jones is from Duchesne and Fausett is from Roosevelt Trevor Wfikerson of RJH took 4th place, and Wesley Ercanbrack also of RJH took fifth. In the beginning programming display category, Silver took first plaee, Ercanbrack took second, Larry Khoades of Duchesne took 'third. to Troy went At the Junior High level, Roosevelt won most of the categories. In beginning programming, Jason Bell of RJH took first place. McKenna of Union. Third place also went to Union, to Dustin Nielson. Gary Dudley of Altamont placed fourth, and Pam Spencer of Duchesne came in fifth. In the Beginning Programming Display category, Maxwell again took first, with Duchene taking the next four places. The' students showed self discipline, knowledge, wit, and well represented Wildlife Resources and the National Rifle Association. Individual competitive events will be held for .22 rifle, shotgun, archery, and hunter skills. The purpose of this state competition is to recognize young Utah hunters for the excellence 6-- 8. Student of the Month QUEENS Duchesne These School district U.S.U. Extension Service Presents: Duchesne County's 2nd Annual Spring Garden Show! at the Duchesne County Fair Building Friday, March 20, 1987 Two students qualified for student of the month honors this month at Altamont High School. Danelle Durfey and Jennifer Tuft tied for selection os student of the month. Durfey is the daughter of Glen and Pauline Durfey of Upalco. She has been active in many high school activities. as well as keeping up honor roll grades during her high school years. She has served as president of the Freshman class and is currently the secretary of the Senior Class. She has been a cheerleader for three years, and is now a varsity cheerleader. She is a member of the high school honor society. She also is actively serving in her church. Durfey is working on the co-o- p program at the high school. So she attends classes in the morning and works at a local clothing store in the afternoon. Tuft is the daughter of Gerry and Dorcas Tuft. She has also been involved in many school activities as well as maintaining honor roll grades throughout high school. She has been a member of the band since the fifth grade, and has earned many awards in that area, including recent attendance at a state honor band in Salt Lake. She has also worked on the staff of the yearbook and newspaper, currently serving as editor of both publications. She is a Sterling Scholar candidate in music. Both a junior and a senior will be Team of Champions selected to represent Utah at the North American Championships workshop judges. The judges heard her correctly spell the word. The SPELLING category. Taylor, schools! The stress of the competition was over, ribbons were passed and the trophies were presented to those who rightfully earned them. Another winner was there, perhaps unnoticed by some. A young lady was given a word to spell and did spell it for the spelled. The valiant young lady then came forward and said that a mistake was made and that she did indeed misspell the word. She acknowledged the mistake knowing that she would "spell out" and would no longer be able to continue the competition. Educators and the school system are charged with a great responsibility in enriching the minds of the young people of society. The values and attitudes developed by the school age population influence all of us. Emphasis is often placed negative actions demonstrated by the school age population. The courage it took for this young lady to show honesty and fairness shows the caliber of our youth. Most of our young people are seeking positive Any Utah hunter under age 19 is eligible to compete, in either the junior or senior category, provided they have completed a Utah Hunter Education Course and are sponsored by a certified Utah Hunter Education Instructor. Competitors, age 14 end under, may compete in the junior or they have attained and to select outstanding young sportsmen and sportswomen to represent Utah at the North American Hunter Education Championship competition to be held, this year, at Hardware Ranch, near Hyrum, The North American August Hunter Education Championship will involve young hunters from all over the United States and their respective a tape to determine how the student spelled the word and again determined the word was correctly Canada. He started his career in New Mexico and the Navajo Indian Reservation at Crown Point. He moved to Duchesne Elementary two years later and taught there for 7 years. He was then hired to take the principalahip at Myton Elementary for the next 6 years. And with the start of the 1986-3- school year he was assigned principal at the newly constructed Roosevelt Middle School.
