March 18, 1987, Lariettes win in Region meet Two rival drill teams faced off in region competition Tuesday, but the Altamont Lariettes won over the Duchesne Debutantes by a mere two points alter it was all over.. Consequently, the Lariettes will go on to state competition this Saturday 21, at Spanish Fork. The competition was close, as each team won two portions of the contest. The Debutantes won the Activities Continued from page population of 170. Obviously, many students are involved in more than one activity. Mitchell estimated that at lease 34 of his student body was involved in high school activities. In a page by page check of the Altamont yearbook, approximately 5 seniors, 6 juniors, and 10 sophomores were found who were not involved in high school activities. This computes to between 11 and 16 percent of the class members not participating. That gives an 84 percent to 89 percent participation rate. Again, many of these students are involved in more than one activity. This is a lot of statistics, but what does it all mean? The Utah High School Activities association would like you to believe these activities are important to the success of high school students. They cite a study done by the American College Testing Service (ACT) that achievement in school activities was the only significant predictor of success after high school Not useful as predictors were high grades in high school high grades in college, or high ACT scores. They also cite a study done in North Dakota that revealed that grade point averages for students in activities was 3.32 as opposed to a average of 2.48. A Minnesota High School study indicated that athletes were absent an average of one day leu than the average students. A further study in the San Francisco Bay area discovered that absences were significantly greater during than in season of the participant's sport. A National study by the of High School Associations found that only four percent of the high school drop-out- s were' involved in activities. Another national survey, this time of high school principals revealed that 95 percent believed participation in activities teaches valuable lessons to students that cannot be learned in a regular classroom. Ninty-nin- e percent agreed that participation in Federation activities promotes citisenship. Ninty-fiv- e percent agreed that to novelty categories. Duchesne won the prop category with a delightful straw hat and cane routine which was nicely carried out, with some very tricky maneuvers. They will compete at state with this routine. The Lariettes won the novelty routine with a cute alpine boy and Juvenile Judge, Matt Railey has heard eases for more than 6,000 youths in his El Paso County courtroom. No more than two or three percent had some involvement in athletics. he said. Thompson and Michelle Ayeock of Duchesne taking second and third. The drill down is a competition where all participating drill team members must execute commands quickly. They are progressively eliminated as they, make mistakes until only one is left. Members of the Altamont Lar-ietDrill team are Amber Burton, Monica Thacker, Gina Taylor, Gina Mower, Cindy Lindsay, Christy te Shiner, Michelle Privet, Becky Wall Sandy Stevenson, Lori Cook, Annette Tew, and Kimberlee Thacker. They are coached by Jeanne Dastrup. The Debutante team consists of Roxanne Ringeo, Michelle Thompson, Jenae Taylor, Brenda Abbott, Stephanie Argyle, Michelle Ay-coc- k, Patricia Gunderson, Tina Hamlin, Vicena Lupoid, Kristyn Peterson, Pam Spencer, Corinne Wilkin. Tammy Peterson is their coach. Moon, Lori "'A fSsC. Obviously, there are some positive things about high school activities. However, although there may be a definite correlation between participation in activities, grades, and success, that doesn't necessarily mean that one causes the other. It may be that students who are able to succeed in high school activities will also succeed after high school regardless of whether those activities are available. In other words, successful people may be able to achieve in any situation, including high school activities. The argument that participation in high school activities keeps students in school is a persuasive one. However, once again, perhaps those who drop out would not have been able to participate or had the desire to participate whether those activities were available or not. Even if you grant that activities are mostly good for students, in today's economy, it may be worthwhile to seriously consider the value of the most expensive activities, both in future success to the students and in present bene- fits. It may even be possible to substitute less expensive activities for these more costly ones. For example, soccer costs just half the amount of football per participant. Districts could also place more emphasis on the less costly activities and perhaps limit, ment in the more expensive ones. It has been suggested that city recreation take over the sponsorship of many of the sports activities. However, cities are as beleaguered by financial problems as school districts are. ' Whatever the local school districts decide to do about this study, it has certainly brought some interesting information Garn The Altamont Lariettes won the novelty portion of the region drill team competition Tuesday night with this adorable Swiss Boy and girl dance. Altamont also won the over-al- l competition and will be competing Saturday at state finals in 13 producers filled the gap. Oil imports jumped in 1986 by d to 5.9 million barrels a day from 8.9 million barrels a day in 1985. And by the end of 1986, oil imports were flooding in at 6.3 million barrels a day, Gars said. As a result, our dependence on foreign oil last year rose to nearly 40 percent, for above the 27 percent level in 1985. Mae important, our dependence is now considerably above the 83 percent vulnerability level which precipitatd in 1978 OPEC oQ crisis in this country, Garn said. Specifically, Garn said the bill will do the following1. Require the President to submit Spanish Fork. one-thir- annual projections to Congress detailing anticipated domestic ofl production, demand and imports for a three-yea- r period. He will also be expected to certify if foreign oil imports are expected to exceed the 50 percent ceiling during that three-yea- r period. If imports are projected to exceed 50 percent, this President is obligated to submit an energy plan to Congress within 90 days containing steps adequate to prevent exceeding that ceiling. Garn said the bill notes a number of suggestions for the President regarding energy conservation and import foes, but does not mandate any specific course of action. Save federal dollars file taxes early Why should I file my tax return Ive got tQ April 15, dont I? These questions in answer to questions on why a taxpayer hasn't yet filed his or her tax return are easily answered and still people are procrastinating in filing their 1986 tax return. Each year few the last several years, we have seen more people waiting until April before filing their Federal tax returns," Salt Lake City District IRS Public Affairs Officer Bill Craig stated. Craig noted that already Utahns are five percent behind in filing their returns when compared to last year at the same time which was also behind the previous year's now? filings. Since more than 65 percent of Utah taxpayers received a refund last year, it just doesn't make sense for them to wait to file, Craig said. He added, They are hurting themselves in three ways by waiting to file: First, the longer they wait the more returns will have been filed so will take longer to process their iit return. If they file now they will have their refund in about four weeks. If they wait, it could be six weeks or longer. Secondly, by waiting they dont have use of their money to spend or invest it If they invest it, they will reap the interest not Uncle Sam. Thirdly, they save as taxpayers since the IRS will save on staff hours by spreading the workload over a longer period. Currently the majority of the tax returns are filed between April 1 and 15. We have 45 days after April 15 to process the returns or we start paying1 interest-th- at comes out of useable tax dollars. In addition, it means we have to pay some overtime-th-at also comes out of useable tax dollars. So it just makes sense, Craig emphasized, that people save themselves and the government money." He further commented that when a person files a return early and it has an error, that error can be corrected foster and they will still get their refund earlier. For those who don't get a refund or have to pay additional tax, if there is an error on their return or they wind up having to pay penalties or interest, the sooner it is taken care of the less costly for them. It just makes sense that people should file earlier, and why not Now? Craig concluded.
