Show Pfl ( November 12, 1986 2. UJintah Editorial Basin Standard Voters should be proud We were pleased to see , a tation of their future performances. And although it was an 'off year larger-than-norm-al turnout in Duchesne and Uintah Counties for the November 4 election. Watching large number of voters taking time out of their busy schedules to do their 'civic duty was nice. Duchesne had an uhconfirmed 61 percent while Uintah had close to 70 percent of voters making the trip to the election booths last Tuesday. It is comforting to know a. large amount of people care about who represents them. Voting is your chance to tell officials just exactly how you feel about their past performances, or your expec- - - because of no presidential race, it was still pleasant to see large numbers of people voting. The barrage of editorials telling voters to vote possibly paid off. Now the people who did vote now have a right to complain to or about their elected officials. The people who chose not to take the time out of their "bus' schedules should keep quiet until 1988. Remember, that one vote you placed Tuesday, is what this Democratic society is based on. Not taking the opportunity, makes us wonder why. . UDOT does it their way The controversy over East Highway 40 going, even after the paint crews visited town last Thursday. Despite everything that has gone on in past weeks, UDOT did it their way. is still editorials and stories the picture was clear to many that UDOT would do whatever they wanted to do along this piece of roadway. Mayor Yack and the city council could do little if anything to alter the jaggemut known as UDOT. They were not swayed by public opinion. They responded to Alarik Myrin's request but apparently only because he had a seat on the committee in the legislature that UDOT must answer to. They relied upon their May report which was thrown together after a few hours, if that, on the site of the problems. This report, which could be the subject of several editorials in itself, is three pages of tripe. But never let it be said UDOT doesn't stand by their guns - right or wrong they go down clinging to their regulations and reports. In Still they push on qnd do what they The Uintah Baiin Standard welcome and encourages opinions from readers in the form of Letters to the Editor. Magic show was more than 'fair' Dear Editor, I was pleased, in fact, delighted with the magic show sponsored Monday night, November 3, by the Chamber of Commerce. Christopher Fair put on a fun, entertaining family show: clean as a whistle, and imaginative to keep the . adults enough interested, while the youngsters were thrilled. He even involved the teens that were there, and he made it easy to laugh at him and ourselves. To me, its evidence that our community is in favor of such family entertainment, keep it up, Ted! Maybe next time, whatever the show is, there will be a full house. I'm glad to admit I almost didn't take my family because of the cost, but 88.00 was not much at all for such a fun family night At the risk of sounding bite, Roosevelt can rise above apathy and negatism, and each persons efforts are important answerable to the Governor, who appoints its officers, the legislature, who provides its funding, and to no one else, apparently. . The people are only there to be put up with, obviously. They don't know the! regulations and so must not be of the inner circle. The people that live with what UDOT does are just minor annoyances, akin to the bugs of summer - something Ip be swatted at and threatened ("we could always find another route around Roosevelt," they still threaten). UDOT is still crying over the loss of revenue for the highways from the feds. They are getting a bit of their own medicine. But still it doesn't make them anymore responsive or empathetic to local residents that must suffer under their boot. It should 'not be surprising to local residents that UDOT painted the road the way they had first intended. UDOT is Sincerely, Karla Cox Thanks for election help Dear Editor, I would like to thank the many people who were so willing to help in my recent campaign for the House of Representatives. One of the highlights of the whole campaign was being able to meet with many of you and discuss concerns and issues you have. Campaigning was a very positive experience and I appreciate your kindness and encouragement. Because of the economic slow down and other adjustments we are making it is even more important that we take a positive and determined look at the problems facing us. It is important that we all work together in working out solutions or looking at alternatives. I make a commitment to work as hard as possible in representing us at the State Legislature. I encourage you to contact me as we work together in making decisions that effect all of us. Your input and ideas are very important and you ' need to let your views be known. Again, thanks to the many who helped and supported us in the recent election. I want to extend a special thanks to my family who supported me all the way and worked very hard throughout this campaign. To those businesses who depend Dear Editor, At first glance from the L&L comer down the new highway to Big O, it looks great .If you are this average citizen traveling that road you can see absolutely no problems. Let me fill you in on a few things you are not aware of. Those businesses and residents who call East Highway 40 home have been sold down the river by the Mayor and part of the city An agreement was council. reached last week by those property owners and UDOT to restripe the street leaving the parking except for 100 on each comer of 600 East which would be painted red restricting parking. This same proposal eras printed in last weeks STANDARD and was on the radio up to and including Thursday morning. This decision eras one everyone felt they could live with. ; I would like to express my appreciation for all those who have helped with our campaign and those who voted. I would especially like to thank Roger Dart, campaign manager, and those who helped him. I am pleased that we were successful I would also like to express appreciation fin: the press in the Uintah Basin. The radio stations and newspapers have made a real effort to get information out to the public about who was running and what their platforms were. The challenges ahead are great, but. so are the opportunities we have to deal with them. Thank You, Alarik Myrin Commendation for winner ' Accountants. Tax Strategy: To determine tax strategy, your best year-encompare your projections for your 1986 and 1987 income and expenses. To defer income: Investing in dther government securities or a certificate of deposit that will mature next year is a good way to defer income into 1987.. By investing your money now you. will defer taxation on the interest for a year allowing you to pay less in taxes and to lower tax brackets in 1987. Under the tax reform .act, taxpayers will continue to pay a 10 percent penalty for . withdrawls they take before the age of 59V4. ' Selling your home: If you were thinking about selling your home in the near future, youll be glad to know that the net tax laws wont affect you. You can still defer the profits from the sale if, within two years, you buy another home that costs at least as much as the one you sold. If you are 66 or older, you can make a one time election to exclude up to $125,000 in gains on the sale of your home. Channeling income to children: If you've been shifting income into trusts for your children, be aware of a possible tax increase. Money put into an account for a child under the age of 14 will be taxed at the parents rate, even if the account existed before the tax reform act Children older than 14 are excluded from the tax increase.
