Shoes were donated by the Nike Corporation, thought some children didn't receive theirs because from the time the tennis shoes were ordered at the first of the year and when they got thank - the smaller athletes had grown a size or two. Horrocks said Special Olympics received an abundance of equipment last year due to the U. S. boycott of the World Olympics and manufacturers donated surpl Olympics. In addition to meals, equipment and time, volunteers also donate money to the Special Olympic budget. The program is run entirely on donation, it receives no grants. According to the Duebesne County Sheriffs Department, Gordon was to meet other family members on a planned wood cutting trip to the Bear Wallow Area. He was cutting by himself when he fell a tree into another tree and became lodged. Apparently when trying to dislodge the tree by cutting the standing tree, instead of. falling in the direction Gordon expected it to, it anapped and twisted, allowing the first tree to fall, striking Gordon on the head. Family members, Mirl Jennings and Darreld Munden found him pinned under the tree when they got to the area. They transported him to the Duchesne County hospital where Dr. Guy White pronounced it an accidental death. 1 . ! the lagoons with clay, surface water would not be a problem. Information on that statistic and others dealing with education are included in a new Utah Education Association booklet entitled How Utah Ranks, 1982-8UEA President Hurley Hansen Utah ranked first said that in 1964-6in the nation in the proportion of men teachers, with 41.2 percent. The latest rankings show Utah tenth in that category with 38.85 percent. The UEA publication demonstrated again that Utahns pay a relatively high per capita amount for public school (12th highest in the nation at 8491.95), yet the state spent leas per pupil ($1,814) than any other state in the nation except Alabama. This seems to be a contradiction, but it really isnt, said Hansen. next-to-lowe- st over-6-5 It occurs because Utah has the highest birth rate in the nation, and that means families have more children in schools. Children are included in the expenditure, but they dont pay a lot of taxes. ta per-capi- Hansen said the fact that Utah pays the nations amount of money to educate each student is a very serious situation, and that many of the problems in our school system arise from that one statistic. next-to-the-low- Utah still has the largest class sizes, according to the publication. It shows that Utah public schools had 24.5 students enrolled per teacher last year, the highest in the nation. Vermont had thelowest class size, 13.88 students per teacher. This confirms a UEA study made said UEA Research last fall, Director Don Ulmer. Several statistics in the UEA publication confirm that Utahs population ia the youngest in the residents-2.9-7. Utah had the nations highest percentage of school age children for every 100 adults age. 21 or older last percent The national average waa 29.Q7 percent. Once again, the percentage of Utah young people enrolled in public schools was near the among the states. Utah had 94.7 percent of its school aged children enrolled in public schools last year. Many of these statistics impinge on the quality of Utah schools in a very real way, Hansen said. They tell the story of some of our biggest problems." The fact that we have the largest classes in the nation cannot help kids' opportunity to learn, he said. The fact that our spending is the second lowest in the nation also tells ua something. Our decline in the number of men teachers demonstrates that many heads of households simply cannot remain in teaching with salaries lagging behind the other professions the UEA the way they are, president added. year-42.- 47 top-fou- rth per-pup- Hogs $25.00 ph $275.00425.00 $165.00 Goats !
