Show 19 Sports Uintah (Basin Standard Duchesne at home in basketball opener The Duchesne Eagles' basketball program starts this Friday, November 20, at home against Wayne County high SchooL The Eagles have quite a reputation to live up to this year, taking fifth in State last year and finishing the year with a 16-record. Cuach Stan Young states the squad this year, although very small, has the speed for a great offense and the drive to be a better defensive team than last year. The Eagles have three returning starters, Jeff Abplanalp, Tren Grant, and Kirk Bailey. Our biggest men are Kirk Bailey, Pat Dugan, and Scott Peterson, who all round out at 62". Coach Young kept commenting on the team's spirit this year. The kids are working as hard as any team that I have coached," he stated. They seem to have a different attitude toward work and practice than in the past. The biggest difference in the team 8 this year is the fact that they won't n have a team. We have some really good shooters, and some real hustlers that forces us to play as a team." Young pointed out that they will run with the ball this year. He wasn't sure how much they would depend on the fast break, but said they would run and run and run that ball. Point guards this year are Darrin Brady, Jeff Abplanalp and John Cultler. Tren Grant will be moved from guard to the forward position. Young pointed out that he is making the transition very well. He will probably score more there because he will get the ball in scoring position, slated Young. We just don't have a center," remarked his Young, explaining decision to play a offense. Pat Dugan would play the post position if they went to post the one-ma- three-forwar- d offense. Throughout the interview. Coach Young continually praised this year's team. In his nine years of coaching, four of them at Duchesne, he had hover had a bunch of boys that have than been more practice-oriente- d these. Wayne County High School, located in Bicknell, is returning the game this year to Duchesne. The Eagles traveled to Bicknell last year and won. Wayne will be big and physical," commented Young, pointing out that Duchesne's JV was beaten last year by Bicknell. All home games will begin with JV at 5:45 pm., and varsity at 7:30. Next week Duchesne will host a tournament with teams from East Carbon, Price and Tabiona. When asked how Region should end ups this year, Young thought that it would be between Monticello, Altamont and Duchesne. Well compete with anybody because of our quickness," he said. Cougars prepare for Moab in opener Kun the Dasketbait and keep it interesting for the teams and apertat-or- s is Coach Brad Monks game plan for the coming basketball season at Union. Our guards, Lonnie Sammaripa and to be the quickest and are getting done what we want them to do," stated Monks. Dean Townsend looks like an animan on the boards, said Monks. He also is doing what the coach wants in the boards with controlling agressiveness. Doug Allen and Ricky Nielsen, both juniors will play the two forward positions with Greg Bellon and Lynn Johnson coming in as swing men playing the guard or forward Cory Dye, seem Eddie Fisher tries to score against Robbie Lindsay during an Altamont practice. Altamont opens up the season against Wayne County this Saturday. MAKES FAKE Duchesne Booster Club hosts shoot Now that everyone baa had the pistols and rifles out and are all practiced up because of the past hunting seasons, everyone is invited to the Duchesne Boosters Club third annual Turkey Shoot, November 21 at 10 &.m. The turkey shoot will allow any caliber rifle or pistol to be used, but there is no class for shotguns. All entries will get one shot per target and the closest to the center of the target gets the turkey. The Booster Club has hosted this event and turned the proceeds over to Duchesne High School. This year the they plan to buy equipment for the auditorium, including follow spotlights. position. If we come up against a real big team, we will have to do some defensive changing, stated Monks, so that we match up better. Right now it is a toss up between Brian Snow and James White for center. Monks stated that White seems to be a little more offensively oriented by looking to score and not being scared to shoot. The Cougars will definitely have a running offense and this causes certain problems like a lot of turnovers. Also, Monks explained that the floor looks unorganized as ten kids try to get into position as the ball is sped down the floor. The biggest problem that fares a fast breaking team is the adjustment from a quirk tempo to a slow one, said Monks, but this works both ways. We just have to get them to plav our kind of ball." Union is looking to do a lot of full court options. Monks staled that the full court press may not he ready before Region, but that they will be working on its perfection. Sometimes you can break a game wide open with the fast break," Monks excitedly stated. We want to be able to control the game so that it is them making the transition to our game plan instead of us making the transition to theirs." Brad pointed out that the defense is looking good but that you can always play better defense in the first of the vear than offense. Club President Kit Pierce and her husband George, vice president, stated that the shoot would be held up the Indian Canyon road about two miles south of Duchesne. They will have at least 40 turkeys for the outing. Phone man-to-ma- n The windiest city in the U.S. is Greet Fells, Montane, where the average wind speed is 13.1 m.p.h. Chicago, the notorious Windy City," actually ranks only 16th the windiest U.&. cities. Supplies Limited Duchesne Phone Orders Welcome Free tried out for the team. The Tabby coach said the reserved season tickets are now on sale and can be obtained by contacting him at the school. Although the two malls are being proposed. Brown and Schmutz said their proposal is not made because of bad feelings. Brown and Schmutz both stressed that their development isnt being proposed to run anyone else out of business. They said they see a market opportunity and hope to take advantage of it. The plans for the Roosevelt Mall are being done by James Hatch and Rimrock Associates. (L Tigers hit the Tabiona High School has hung up their baseball cleats for the winter and has undertaken, like so many other schools, the game that began many years ago with a peach basket tacked on the walL The 1981-8basketball season will begin for the Tabiona Tigers tomorrow night, under the direction of first year coach, Lee Gines, when they travel to Park City to meet the Miners. Gines, who played his high school basketball at Tabiona, has returned home and said he is expecting a good season. We will be small," said Gines, but the former guard added, we will be very quick at the guardline. Coach Gines said his biggest player will be 6'2 Brian Bolin. He said that although they will be small, he feels their rebounding will be strong, with Travis Fabrizio leading that aspect of the game for the Tigers. Lee said they have been working on the fast break and they are expecting to see a great deal of zone defense. ' Most of the high school teams will throw a zone defense against you, said Gines, but we are expecting a defense from both Altamont and Duchesne. Tm very impressed with the practices," Coach Gines said, although I will be able to tell you more after this weekend. Lee said they aren't really sure what their Friday opponent. Park City, will have, but added the Miners defeated Tabiona by nine points last year. He said he hasn't heard a great deal with this being the first game of the season. Lee said he knows about as much about their Saturday rival, Tintic, as he does about Park City. Gines said about the only thing he knows for sure is that they have a big man to fill the center position who stands at 68". Gines said he ia confident about the weekend, and feels he can rely on his bench to do a job if they are needed. I have several players on my bench who can really come into the game and .do an excellent job," said Gines. Lee said he doesn't have a great deal ot depth, but there were quite a few who All the coaches in the Basin are impressed with the players' attitudes this year, and Coach Monks is not different. He said that their super attitude" is the best he has had for a long time, and it would take them far this season. When asked if the team would be in shape for the game this weekend, he slated that they would be dragging by the fourth quarter, but that would be expected this early in the year. The Cougars will start the season at home this Friday night against Grand County High School from Moab. Monks said that he hasn't received a roster yet, so he doesn't know their size. Last year the Cougars beat them by four points. Brad pointed out that last year they had the same fast running game that the Cougars used, with full court presses and fast breaking guards. He doesn't seem to think they will change much this year. On November 27, the Cougars will travel to Uintah and the next night will play in Altamont. Tffl Drawing for free Turkey Wed.
