If you answer no to these questions you are wrong, and if you answer yes, you probably aren't using the same method that elementary schools in Duchesne County are beginning to use. A program called Talents Unlimited, the idiot program of which was done in the Mobile, Alabama School District, is one which has given very favorable results. The program is very simple and employs the basic characteristics of the individual child. According to Jerry Chapman. Principal at Roosevelt Elementary, the research from the program has determined that children don't achieve as much in the regular classrooms when only the three main skills reading, writing and arithmetic - are taught. When teaching just the academies you have about 50 percent of the class below aveage, said Chapman. However, when Talents Unlimited is employed, about 90 percent of the class is above average." According to Bob Hoopes, an instructor at Duchesne Elementary, a theory has been employed that works m the premise that kids have many different talents. He said the program takes the academics and adds to them productive thinking, communication and kills, planning, forecasting, decision making. According to Hoopes, this program encourages children to think independently. s ChapmqiL said the program begins in the child's first grade year. He said they perform testing to determine which of the five areas already mentioned the child is strongest in. the When this is accomplished program can then proceed. . After testing, the program is implemented into all aspects of the schooling successful program. Both men empha- sized that the program has met success in Duchesne County. The children obtain a better through Talents Unlimited, said Chapman. Jerry said the program was implemented at Roosevelt Elementary with five different group, each one emphasizing one of the five main talents. and a He aaid they gave a pre-teto children to measure their post-teability in communication. Chapman explained that the teat consisted of showing the children a picture of a stump with a mushroom and some moss cm it. The children were then told to ask all the questions about the stump that the picture didn't answer. was then given at a The pre-telater date and the results snowed that one child only asked one question during the first test However, for this child the number of particular questions naked was increased to 16. The increases were just as dramatic for many other children. Although the program is fairly new, both teachers pointed out that the concepts used have been in practice for many years. Hoopes said 14 teachers are implementing the program at Duchesne elementary ami Chapman aaid all of the instructors at Roosevelt are using it The program has shown results after only one year, but both teachers stressed that the program takes about three years to become well establis heed. Chapman and Hoopes indicated that they would like to receive input from parents because parents are an integral part of the program's success. self-conce- pt experience. Homes used science as an example far the promotion of productive thinking. He pointed out that if students are studying mushrooms, the teach may ask the students to determine the many varied or unusual things they can find about the mushroom. The same is done with the other four areas. Although the program has been implemented in many schools in the district, the role of the parents it very important. The parents need to do these activities in the home, said Chapman. He panted out that children need to learn not to accept at face value everything they are told. He said that children need to be encouraged to ask questions and explore the alternative possibilities. Hoopes said that by the time children reach high school they have been taught to sit in a seat, to work, and not to talk. This puts a restraint on creativity. According to Chapman and Hoopes, the main advantage of thus program is that it recognises the strengths of each students and then attempts to use those strengths to make their education experience much stronger. Both stressed that many teachers have done these sort of things in the past, but this program has brought a structure needed for support of the program and has given guidelines to Mow for a more st st st College financial aids programmed for parents A post-higschool orientation tour, sponsored by the State Office of Education, will take on a special light this year, offering a special discussion to parents on scholarships and the obtaining of education monies. h The Basin schools are all visit with representatives institutions of their choice more about their programs. invited to of three to learn Altamont and Tabiona seniors will join with Duchesne on November 19, while Union will host the college mentation group November 18 from 8:45 a.m. to noon. kids The parents of all senior-ag- e are invited to a financial aids presentation conducted by a member of the State Office of Education.
