Show I Thursday, January 15, 1981 Uintah Basin Standard 16 Union wins own Classic, 'outstanding' to DHS boy The Cougar Clauic Wrestling Tournament turned into a tournament of champions last weekend. Union, with five sophomores, four juniors, and three seniors on its team, humiliated the other contenders, easily taking first place honors with 178 points. Coming in second was Millard with 134 points. First round scores were close with Union in second place with 28 points, Millard 24ft, Ben Lomond and South Summit had 20, Bear River and Murray 18, and Carbon 0. Manti cancelled out of the tournament for the second straight year, leaving an open slot in the match, jay Linford, from Duchesne, came over as an independent, winning first place honors in that weight. 98 Pounds The Union sophomore, Bardett Fausett, stated that he had a lot of the responsibility in starting all the matches and setting the mood for the whole team. In the final round he did just that by defeating Hansen of Bear River for first place. He got the first takedown in the championship match, but was reversed quickly and spent the rest of the first round wondering what had hold of him. He started up in the second, got reversed again, but with a very controlled reversed back and then move, controlled the rest of the match on top. In the third period he finally made his move and won a three-poin- t near fall, but couldn't quite pin the Hansen boy. Finally, Hansen escaped with seconds to go but Fausett won the match Earlier in the year Fausett was beaten 8 by Hansen in a duel match, and he stated that he had never wanted a match so badly. Moody of Murray and Potter of South 8ummit took third and fourth. 105 Pounds Jeff Samuels, another sophomore for Union, entered high school with a second in the State Freestyle Tournament and an excellent junior high reeord. He put the clinch on first place by controlling Des Champs of Ben Lomond 11-in the championship round. Samuels went through Kirk-hafrom South Summit and McGuire from Murray to get to the last round. He won the first takedown, immediately turned right around with a cradle hold to score two on a predicament call, only to let McGuire escape. The Jeff had a rough first period ended second round, starting up them being reversed and finally put in a near foil position. He then was behind 5-- The third round was most exciting with Samuels starting down. There were escapes, takedowns, and near falls, with Samuels winning . Jeff stated that although Dixie's man was tough, McGuire was the toughest man yet ' this yeari Nelson from Bear River and Setrle from Millard took third and fourth. 112 Pounds Ferrell McCook lost the championship round to a kid that "knows his moves and is very smooth in executing them, said Ferrell. Having a bye the first round and beating Willmre from Ben Lomond, McCook earned the right to wrestle Jimmie, from Millard, last years state champ. Ferrell was taken down but escaped, managing to take Jimmy down with 19 seconds left in the first round. Ferrell started down, and escaped. Holman from Murray and Willard from Ben Lomond took third and fourth. 119 Pounds Stacy Hadlock, sophomore, came to Union with a junior high record of 11-With some really tough matches, he placed fourth in the tournament. Ortegon of Ben Lomond won a close match with Probert of Millard by Hadlock won his first bout against Bird of Murray, lost to Ortegon, beat Daniels of Carbon, and then lost a dose one to Woolstenhulme of South Summit. He was taken down only to escape. He started down in the second, reversing, but then letting Woolstenhulme escape. The score was tied. Hadlock was then called for stalling. In the third he started up and after a struggle Woolstenhulme escaped. winning the match 126 Pounds At 126, Mervin Glines, who placed second in the state freestyle last year, placed fourth in the tournament. Glines, another sophomore, won the first round against Roberts of Bear River, lost to the champion, Prescott of South Summit; beat Henery of Millard and lost to Hernandez of Ben Lomond. Against Hernandez, Glines was taken down and put into a pinning 145 Pounds Loren Anderton, a junior, at145 is having a great first year wrestling at Union, taking third last weekend. Loren defeated Hamblin, Union JV, Crook of Millard took first plsre honors. Johnson of Ben Lomond forfeited the championship round because of a leg injury, and took second place. Anderton took third and Hamblin was fourth. 155 Pounds Brian Long, sophomore, took second in the tourney, losing to Broad us of Bear River, Brian had a bye the first round, beat Cottrall of Ben Lomond and then went into the championship round with Braodus. He was taken down and had a three-prin- t near fall against him in the first round, tie was reversea in tne secona out escaped.
