Even those photobugs who live in temperate climes occasionally find themselves together with camera, film and flakes. Why shouldn't they take photos? Given the right light, tillers, and frames of mind, the resulting shots might well turn out to be dramatic winners. If you've hesitated dragging your camera out into the frigid northern climates, you could be missing something. Anywhere people ana snow get together, you can iutt bet there are going to be plenty of smiling faces and Ana, so far is your camera's holding up to the cold, relax it's built to take a lot more than you might expect. Now, if you're planning on spending a week shooting at the North Pole, it would be wise to take your equipment to a manufacturers repair representative or an independent repair technician for winterizing. That means removing all the normal lubricants which might freeze and replacing them with graphite which won't freeze. Short of that, however, most cameras will function quite well...even, in fact, down to 20 degrees below aeno ro lly for short periods of time. In between shootings, you can always keep your equipment warm by huddling it beneath your coat or in an insulated pocket If you use any equipment that requires batteries (like most cameras do these days), be sure to take a fex extras along. Cold weather drains battery power faster than you might realize. And nothing is more frustrating that getting ready to take a shot and realizing your camera's batteries just went dead. Choose the right film for conditions, too. While you may normally use a 400 ASA film, shooting that last'' a film in snow on a sunny day may give you a All that light bouncing migraine. around could prove too much for a e 400 ASA film. A better choice would be something in the ASA 0 range. Or bring long a 4X .tieutral density filter for reducing the light reaching that 400 ASA film. And, speaking of filters, use a K-- 2 Yellow or an 0-- 2 Orange with black and white film for more dramatic skies (they darken blue, making white clouds appear more dramatic). When shooting color or black and white, use a polarizing filter to relieve the glare so common off snow and ice. (Canon F-- l or FTb users should follow special procedures because of built-iangled beam splitters; talk to your Canon dealer.) Be wary of your meter's reading when measuring the light on a bright day or against snow. Because the bright snow influences the meter, your subject is likely to come out The same holds true when shooting s backlit subject. If you don't want the subject to come out as a silhouette, you'll nave to deliberately overexpose by an estimated one-twfstops. Use your exposure compensation dial, if your camera has one. Or set vour camera's ASA dial to half the film's ASA rating (for example: the dial at 100 for a 200 ASA film 64 for a 125 ASA film). -- '.:K'' " i- ' P a Bose Mud Company Roosovolt, Utoh Fri., Jan. 16th, 11:00 A.M.
