Show Thursday, January 15, 1981 Chamber elects officers and board of directors The Roosevelt Area Chamber of Commerce elected board members and officers at the December 17 board meeting of the organization. Board members elected to serve three year terms included Gordon E. Harms ton, Jr., Mark Stewart and Jack Thompson. Mark Stewart was also elected to the office of president-elec- t. Jack Thompson will also serve a dual role with the Chamber, having been elected to the office of second meeting were Tom Nordstrom, president, and Gene Goodrich, first Paula 0. Bell was retained as executive of the Chamber. vice-preside-nt Gordon E. Harmston, Jr., is the owner and manager of the Frontier Cafe and Grill. He was born and raised in Roosevelt and is a 1966 graduate of the University of Utah with a MBA degree. Harmston served in the United States Army for three years and is married to the former Kay Mason. They are parents of three children. He is currently serving his second term on the Roosevelt City Council. Mark Stewart has lived in Roosevelt most of his life. He has been active in the Chamber during the past years and was recently a member of the Roosevelt Emergency Medical Technician Association. He is the of Stewart's Thriftway. Stewart is married to the former Glenda Rhoads and is the father of a baby daughter. Jack Thompson moved to Roosevelt in 1971 and opened his business, Jack's Insulation, in November of 1977. He is married and has four children, three girls and one boy. Thompson has been a member of the Chamber for four years and was previously a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce for four years in Northern Montana. He feels that his tenure on the board will be a learning experience. KSTU on the air in Basin by July According to a press release distributed Jan. 6, KSTU, TV 20 has received unanimous support from the Duchesne and Uintah County Commissions to go ahead with plans for a new network of translators to allow Uintah Basin broadcast of the Salt Lake City independent television station. The plans call for three translators to serve the areas of Roosevelt, Duchesne and VernaL The release estimated that the equipment would be in operation by July of 1981. Applications for construction permits will be completed and sent to the Federal Communications Commission within the next few weeks, according to the release. KSTU has been in operation since October 1978 along the Wasatch Front. The station broadcasts 19 hours per day on Monday through Thursday, all night on Fridays) and Saturdays, and 15 hours on Sunday. Programming consists of movies each afternoon and evening, children's programming from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and adult programs after 9 p.m. Duchesne County Commissioner Lorvn Ross stated that the Commie- - ion had given the go ahead for the project several months ago, after a representative from KSTU met with the commissioners. According to Ross, uie plans call for KSTU to furnish the Tabby Mountain equipment, with the then installing the local county translators. Ross also said that a group from the noosevelt area had approached the commission about 18 montha ago asking that the commissioners give the go ahead for plans to acquire the signal from KBYU Channel 11. At that time, the commission asked the group to ask the school districts (KBYU is an educational station) and Uintah County for whatever help they would be willing to provide to assist in paying for the translators. Ross indicated that the commission has not heard from the group since. The cost for individual translators is approximately $10,000 each, said Ross. The Duchesne County 1981 budget has allocated $60,000 in the TV equipment fund to provide few new translators. "As far as I'm concerned, the commission gave its approval to both Channel 11 and 20 some time ago," said Ross. Board of Directors. Kota Jim Reidhead, Roosevelt, was chosen as the Duchesne County Commission Chairman in organizational action by the commissioners at their Jan. 6 meeting. Reidhead and fellow Republican Alton Moon, Duchesne, were elected to the commission last November. They were sworn in Jan. 5. Reidhead replaces Loryn Ross, Pleasant Valley, as commission chairman. Ross is a Democrat. New department assignments were also given to the three commissioners. Reidhead will be responsible for weeds and mosquito abatement Moon will take charge of the hospital board, the county fair, and planning and zoning. Ross will handle the library, health, and aging. All three commissioners will be over water and roads. The commission also elected to continue with their Tuesday general commission meeting schedule. In last week's STANDARD, there appeared a front page story titled, "Altonah fire burns house." In that story, Duchesne County Deputy Sheriff Travis Mitchell was quoted as estimating the response time of the Altamont Fire Department as minutes. According to Chief Dee Roberts, the response time was seven minutes.
