If the blocked vessel serves the heart, the situation can result in a heart attack. A stroke can occur if the obstruction is in the brain. "Often these arterial blockages occur in the lower extremities, Dr. Miller uys. The first signal of trouble comes when the victim begins any . activity which places increased blood demands on the affected artery. The muscle being exercised then needs additional amounts of blood which cannot get through the narrowed artery causing moderate or severe pain. Most arteries have to be narrowed to 70 percent of their width before any paid is felt. However, the larger arteries can tolerate larger plaque formations before any discomfort is noticed.. Traditionally physicians treat these plaques by surgically removing the disused tanner surface of the vessel in Rangely. e Remo and Dean Hamblin spent last week in Richfield with relatives, e Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tomlinson went to Vernal to witness their son Brownie receive the presidency of the Elder's Quorum. e Mr. and Mrs. James Powell have a new Moirttfoll will s their home in VeraaL days. But since many of these victims are elderly, they often have additional health problems which make them poor candidates fra surgery. Therefore many of these patients simply had to . eliminate those activities which caused them pain. . " . ,. Today a special , balloon-tippe- d catheter offers these individuals another choice. The patient can now receive a local anesthetic and have the unusual catheter Inserted into his affected artery. This catheter is then manuevered through - the blockage, and the balloon is inflated several times. This new procedure takes about 80 minutes to two hours to complete depending upon the .difficulty of reaching the affected artery. The procedure costs around $800 and normally requires only two or three days of hospitalization. "Although this new technique has in its value numerous times the past few years, you must realize its not useful in solving every patient's problem. Its not always successful Dr. Miller adds. Studies show 70 percent of the arteries opened with the balloon catheter will remain so throughout the next two years. "But even in those eases where the artery reeloses, we can normally perform the procedure again, he notes. "And then if the technique still doesn't work, surgery is still' a viable option. Balloons are novelties normally associated with children, county fain and birthday parties. But today balloons are moving into the hospital setting to provide a unique type of treatment lor persons suffering from arteriosclerosis, according to Dr. Mark H.
