We should all stop ana think about what we receive from electricity every once in a while. Here are some of the things we receive: e We receive cleanliness from hot water, heated by the electric water heater. e Refrigerators and freezers preserve our food. e Ranges, microwave ovens, toasters and other small appliances prepare the food we eat. e Assistance and information are available to consumer-memberElectrical alarm systems and 'security lights provide us with safety.' e Electricity provides convenience by supplying energy for many time-savidevices, e News and educational programs on radio and television provide us with knowledge and entertainment, a We receive comfort and protrec-tio- n from outside temperatures if the home has electric heat or air conditioning. Divide your electric bill bp 30 (days per month) and then divide it again by the number of people living in your household. This is what it Is costing person. Try it, you will be per day at how reasonable the price of electricity is compared to the price of many other things we use. Electricity is still our greatest bargain and still the most important factor in creating a good lifestyle for the American people. s. Although these ideas have been handed down from generation to generation, they have no basis in scientific fact, according to Dr. Jay A. Jacobson, LDS Hospital and University of Utah infectious disease specialist A cold is actually an upper respiratory tract infection caused by any one of nearly 110 different types of rhinoviruses. The short-terillness is usually accompanied by a scratchy throat runny or stuffy nose and, occasionally, watery eyes. Rhinoviruses live In an infected persons mucous membranes or, for a brief time, on the individual's lumds if he has touched his nose or mucous secretions. The virus is usually passed when the infected person touches another individual "A raid ean also be passed along feu: a short time by such inanimate objects as doorknobs and telephone receivers which have been contaminated," Dr. Jacobson explains. "And of course, sneezing and coughing are excellent ways of spreading the infection." of all the medical Regardless evidence to the contrary, many e cold theoriea are still repeated and followed by millions of people. "Today we know a viral old-tim- infection absolutely depends upon the victim coming into direct or indirect contact with a diseased person," notes Dr. Jacobson. "These viruses don't live in water or become more infectious in cold weather. In fact, when a person goes outside wearing a heavy coat, mittens or gloves, the danger of contamination may drop simply because his contact with other people is decreased," he adds. Even if a cold is caught, there is usually little to fear. The infection normally only lasts three to four days, although some persons may be left with a lingering cough. "The best thing to do if you catch a cold is to be patient," he says. If a fever or soreness is present, take e for aspirin or an relief. An decongestant can also be effective in overcoming a stuffy nose. This does not mean colds affect everyone in an identical manner. Some people require no medications and little additional rest to recover from the infection. Other people aren't so aspirin-substitut- er lucky. "Those persons who are depressed or experiencing other problems in their lives may feel their cold is s very serious matter and be completely debilitated by it," the physician says. Even in these people, however, raids rarely have serious consequences. Safety council gives winter driving advice You, as a motorist, are urged by the Utah Safety Council to plan ahead for winter weather by practicing careful judgement on the road, and by allowing for extra car lengths between you and the can behind or in front of you. Slippery streets, undintersections, erpasses, ana railroadhighway grade crossings are inevitable at this time of year. If you are involved in a skid, do not hit the brakes heavily. Instead, lift your foot off the gas and turn your wheels to aim the front of the car where you want it to go. . Once the skid is corrected, your straighten and wheels proceed ahead with caution. Getting stuck in snow is another winter hazard that can try anyones temper. The Utah Safety Council suggests the fol- - lowing tips to get you "un-stuc- k. 1. Turn your wheels a few times from side to side to puch snow out of the way of your wheels. 2. Keep a light touch on the gas, and slowly ease forward. 3. Gentle rocking might help, but avoid the of serious possibility damage to the sion transmis- steady, and roll through. sudden Remember: movements of any kind, braking, steering, accelerating, mav put your car in a skid. The Utah Safety Council reminds drivers to plan ahead, and always buckle safety seat belts, no matter how short a trip youre going to drive. by checking your owners manual for rec- ommended procedures. 4. Sand, coarse rock salt or a couple pieces of carpeting can come in hand to tuck under the drive wheels. 5. Tire chains are the best for pulling power in severe snow ana ice. The polishing effect of starting and stopping in traffic on snow and ice multiplies the hazards at intersections and on heavily traveled roads. If you hit an icy spot, ease up on gas, hold the wheel Dangers on the Job Occupational exposure to toxic chemicals can lead to birth defects, infertility, and miscarriage, whether the father or mother is exposed. Although some companies forbid exposure to fertile women, this evid-enc- e suggests men who wish to be fathers might also do well to avoid exposure. INSULATION Lighting is essential for comfort and the preservation of good eyesight. But there are tricks in the use of light that can help you save usage of electricity. For instance: When possible, place lamps in corners. Because they reflect light from two wall surfaces, they provide more usable light than when placed near straight, flat walls.
