Show 12 Decmbf STANDARD 20. 1979 Endangered Utah plants The spineless hedgehog cactus, a native plant of Colorado and Utah, has been placed on the endangered species hat, primarily as a result of depletion by commercial and private collectors. The lack of spines is an unusual characteristic that coupled with its scarlet red flowers, has made this cactus a favorite of collectors. The endangered Siler pincushion cactus, know to exist only in Utah and Arizona, has been depleted in Utah by collection for commercial trade, and could be depleted, further by road building or cattle grazing. The present threat to this plant is general land development and attempted collection for home gardens, although it' does not survive in cultivation. The Longhorns defeated Mi. Vernon 65-3-1 and Manila 70-3-4 during the past week. The ML Vernon team was defeated by the Longhorn Varsity and JV teams. The JV team scored 65 to ML Vernon's 81 points. Everybody on the junior Longnorn team scored, with Colin Larsen leading the pack with 10 points. The Varsity team was led by Mark Birch who sewed 16 points. Mike Frandson followed with 15, Steve Daniels 14, and Mike Todd 10. Eagles on winning streak ' The Duchesne Eaglez have an impressive record after three recent meets. The Eagles traveled to' Emery and battled to a cloee 80-2-8 win. Dec. 18 the Eagles will meet South Summit and Dec. 27 the Eagles will travel to AltamonL El Petersqn. Friday, Dec. 14, 1 in region hosted Manila. Both the Longhorn JV and Varsity teams turned in wins. The JV Longhorns trounced on the Manila JV, winning 96-2The Vanity Longhorns turned in a 70-8-4 victory. Mark Birch scared 19 points, Mike Frandsen 14, and David Brotherson 10. Coach Peterson stated, "They just fired it from anywhere. Everybody and all but one member scored Elayed game. North Rich has 8 big kids, said Coach Peterson, "that have to be shut out down the middle, if Altamont wins the game. The Duchesne Eagles were beat by the North Rich team 87-7- 3 last ' ' Wednesday.
