It ia an opportunity to draw attention to the interscholastic program, to recognize our best coaches, and to motivate all coaches to do the best possible Job of educating boys and progirls through interscholutic grams. National Coaches Day was first authorized by Public Law passed by Congress in August, 1972, and signed by President Nixon. The principal promoters of the event have been the National Sporting Goods Association, the National Federation of State High School Associations and various state coaches organizations. Here are some suggestions for making the event meaningful in your community: e Mail letters to the leaders of civic groups in the community and to the mayor requesting support of National Coaches Day. e Urge local sporting goods stores to run ads in newspapers which express appreciation to coaches for their contributions to young people of the community. in the e Put an announcement student newspaper and in each athletic contest program during September that National Coaches Day is Oct. 6. If a game is to be played Oct 6 or 6, devote the program cover to an announcement of National Coaches Day. e During the days before Oct 5, use public address announcements and signs at schools to remind students and faculty that National Coaches Day is approaching. a Designate Oct 5 as the day all students greet all coaches with Hi Coach" as they pass in the halls of the school. e Hold a school assembly where the entire coaching staff is introduced. One coach might give a brief talk on what coaching has done for him or her. Encourage the student council, pep club or letter winners club to make awards to one or more coaches. A school administrator might comment on the contribution made by coaches to the educational program of the school. e Hold a half-tim-e ceremony at a football game where the entire A coaching staff is introduced. prominent citizen of the community, who once competed in athletics at the school, might be requested to comment about the positive impact roaches hsd on his or her life. Participants compete only against others their own age, and there is no body contact. No special equipment is needed and does not impair a participation youngsters amateur standing.
