How To Make Sure Your Child Has A Good Teacher , fore almost every parent's overriding concern: That the child's school experience be productive and enjoyable. Here are some tips to help the parent be sure his child's teacher successfully discharges his responsibilities toward this end. Begin with a positive attitude' The first day of school, we overheard a mother ask her daughter, "Which teacher did you get?" "Mrs. the child replied. The so-and-s- If you the on chances are constantly, attack, nofcxxJy will listen when you DO have a legitimate complaint. Be specific, don't deal in vague generalities, like, "Johnny hasn't learned a thing since third grade." Most children who exhibit a weakness in one area have compensating strengths in others. Build on the strengths to help correct the weaknesses. Share with your child's teacher approaches that have "worked" before. You will find the majority of teachers receptive, but bear in mind that is impractical. Your youngster may have to do some of ij the adjusting himself. We're all In this together. Children learn out of school, as well as in school. Try and ' make sure that what yours leam at home is supportive of what they are - learning in school. Don't your child's teacher to the neighbors. The teacher your child "can't stand" may be the best thing that hds ever happened to your neighbor's child. Never tear down what you can't rebuild. Incompetent teachers are ultimately fired. The news is not broadcast, for obvious reasons, but It does ; loose a little. The school experience for most is, children, the first step away from the apron strings. If your child has a miserable day, give him time to cool off and put things in perspective before you act. Solving a problem himself can be a most rewarding experience for a child, and contribute greatly to his growth as a person. Go through channels. If you feel your child has a problem at school requiring your intervention, go first to the teacher. Chances are, a communications problem may be the culprit. Team teaching in particular requires each teacher to be responsible for roughly three times the number of pupils as singleclass teaching. It is unrealistic to expect a teacher in such a setting to be intimately familiar with each student's background and personal needs. If you don't get satisfaction, go to the principal. Then, if necessary, to the superintendent of schools. Then to your school board member. that Turn bad-mou- workshop th happen. What all this means is that all certified teachers bring to their positions certain basic skills and abilities. While some teachers are undoubtedly "better" than others, it is often a matter of how one individual responds to another. By doing your part to create a "learning atmosphere" within which a teacher may apply his skills most effectively, you will help every teacher your child has during his school career to be "a good teacher". Scott M. Matheson established Sept 22 as Utah Hunting and Fishing Day., The day honoring Utah's sportsmen and their contributions to conservation will be held in the future on the fourth Saturday of September. In the declaration, the governor cited the many contributions which sportsmen have made to conservation, recreations and the state's economy. Since the turn of the century, hunters and anglers have been the leaders in nearly all major conserve- - . turn programs," said Governor Matheson. He added that it was hunters and fishermen who asked for the establishment of regulated seasons and bag limits, so that sportsmen could harvest the annual crop of game and fish without damage to the breeding populations. UWORF President Sheldon Eppich said he is pleased with the Governor's recognition of Utah's sportsmen. National Hunting and Fishing Day has been celebrated nationally since 1972, with about 15 million sportsmen participating last year. Utah is one of a few states which has made official state declarations. For more information on what you can do for Utah Hunting and Fishing Day, contact the Utah Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Federation, P.0. Box 15636, Salt Lake City, 84115.
