Show Park Sendee may ban jet elds at Lake Powell by 2002 A federal district court judge in Washington, p.C. recently approved a settlement agree ment between environmental groups and the National Parle Service, requiring NPS to prohibit the use of personal watercraft (FWCs), also known as jet skis, on all federal park units nationwide by Fall 2002. The ban applies to the reservoirs at Glen Canyon (Lake Powell) National Recreation Area and Lake Mead National Recreation Area, near Las Vegas. Under terms of the settle- ment, the only exception would be in cases where the agency could prove that the machines do not cause harm to the environment on a given reservoir. This agreement is a victory for public safety and environmental protection, said David Orr, director of field programs for Glen Canyon Action Network (GCAN), a plaintiff in THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, May 2, 2001 - Page 13 While Native Americans and environmentalists celebrated their victory, PWC industry trade groups, the personal watercraft Industry Association and the American Watercraft Association, were not so and other chemicals into happy.
