However, the box will notify San Juan County residents (except in La Sal) of the results of the election. Full election results will be printed in the July 5 issue of the San Juan Record. Forest Service officials are keeping a close eye on the diminuative spruce bark beetle, which threatens the population of spruce trees on the Abajo Mountains. A number of traps and bait trees have been set this summer in order to slow the advance of the beetle. The Forest Service and a local advisory committee is investigating a number of more aggressive options to control the spread of the Photo courtesy U.S. Forest Service beetle. Six will compete Saturday evening for title of Miss San Juan Come and see the Women of the New Millennium! This years Miss San Juan County Pageant will be held on Saturday, July 1, at the San Juan High School Auditorium. The pageant will feature six bright and beautiful young ladies to complete for the crown. Jayneil Frost, age 18, is from Monticello and will perform a flute solo entitled Sonata V by George Frederick Handel. Lucy Frost, age 17, is also from Monticello, and will perform a piano piece entitled Arabesque by Claude Debussy. Jessica Stubbs, a Blanding resident, will perform a piano piece which she composed, called The Dancing 19-year-- Breeze". Katrina Joslin, 18, is from Blanding and will perform a vocal solo entitled Lun Vers Lautre from the Broadway musical French version of Les Miserables. Laralyn Wright, a Blanding resident, will perform a vocal solo from the Broadway musical Evita called Dont Cry for me Argentina". 17-year-- Shylo Hunt, 17, also from Blanding, will perform a piano solo from the Broadway musical Cats entitled Memory. The pageant will consist of four competitions, including Interview, Swimwear, Talent, and Evening Gown. The first two competitions will take place at the Arts and Conference Center in Blanding. The Director of the pagaent this year is Jami Yoakam, with Eva Workman and Joanna Bethea as Co-- Directors. Pam Bayles, who was the second attendant last year, will give away the crown after a piano performance entitled Toccata by Khatchaturian. The 2000 Miss San Juan County will go to compete at the 2000 Miss Utah State Fair on September The pageant begins at 7 pm. There is no admission charge for the event, but donations to the pageant are encouraged. In consideration of this being a competition and formal event, organizers sat that it is not advisable for children under 12 years to attend. 6-- 8. Blanding will celebrate 4th of July over five days The Future May Learn From the Past is the theme of several days of activities as Blanding celebrates the 4 th of July. Activities begin Friday, June 30, with a Midnight Madness softball tournament which will continue all night long. Events on Saturday, July 1 begin at 10 a.m. with a horseshoe tournament, swimming events, and a mud football tournament. Horseshoes begin near the pool, swimming events are at the pool, and mud football begins near the middle school. The charge is $.50 for girl Tyra Dacheneaux Lorinda Clark children and $1 for .adults. Six contestants will vie at the pageant for the right to represent San Juan County. On Monday, July 3, activities begin at noon with craft booths and quilt show at San Juan High School. Volunteers from the San Juan County Search and Rescue were called in to conduct the search. San Juan County Sheriff Mike Lacy said that the costs of the search will be approximately search in$3,000. The two-da- y cluded the use of an airplane and eventually a helicopter. The $3,000 bill will be sent to the lost man. The man and his son began a bicycle trek on Friday, June 23 near the Ducket cabin at the top of the Skyline trail. He apparently became lost and spent a cold night on the Abajos. The Orem man had a cellular phone with extra batteries, but officials said that he was unable to get a clear signal and was not willing to climb a hill in order to call for help. Preliminary searches were not successful, and called for an expansion of the search and rescue effort. Eventually a helicopter found the lost pair in an extremely isolated area west of Shay Mountain. No one was injured, but the pair may feel injured after they receive the $3,000 bill for the search and rescue effort. because San Juan County is light years ahead of any other county when it comes to RS 2477 road issues.
