The illegal dumping has increased a great deal," said Barney. People go to places they think are secluded and dump their trash." Barney said the problem has increased since Sevier County started charging a $15 per ton on garbage brought in by private residents. The idea behind the rate hike was to make the dump use fee fair for everyone, according to the Sevier County Commission. Since the charge was put in place a lot of protest dumping has occurred, said Barney. The problem is people dont dump on their own property, they dump on someone elses. Eventually someone has to pay for the cleanup of all the illegal dumping and that is going to come from the taxpayers. Ironically, some ofthe protest dumping has included items which the landfill doesnt charge for, including animal carcasses, Richfield Reaper metal appliances and limbs.
