Show Hovenweep seeks comments on proposed new visitor center An environmental assess- ment on the proposed concen- struction of a new visitor ter at Hovenweep National Monument is available for public review and comment. The National Park Service is proposing to build a new 2400 visitor center and square-foo- t parking lot near the Tbwer Square group of ruins. The new visitor center and parking lot would be located so that it would not be visible from the ruins on the rim of Little Ruin Canyon. The existing ranger station and accessory buildings, which are visible from the ruins, would be 35-vehi- cle removed. A new barrier-fre- e trail would be built from the new visitor center to the rim of the canyon. The wastewater treatment system currently serving the monuments campground and staff residences would also be replaced. The system overflowed in spring 1999 and is at risk of failing again at any time. The environmental assessment is available from Hovenweep National Monument or from National Park Service offices in Moab, at 2282 South West Resource Boulevard, or in Monticello, at 32 South 1st East. It can also be viewed on the monuments web site at www.nps.govhovenweep. The deadline for comments is May 24, 2000.
