A federal Grand Jury, meeting in Salt Lake City, returned an indictment charging Edward Begaye, 41, with aggravated abusive sexual contact of a child under 12 years of age, abusive sexual contact with a minor, and aggravated sexual abuse of a child under 12 years of age. The FBI arrested Begaye February 24. The U.S. Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case because the alleged conduct occurred on an Indian reservation. Begaye, who is in federal custody and made an initial appearance on the indictment in Salt Lake City, faces a potential maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of the charges in the indictment. Trial is set for late April. FBI officials remind residents that defendants are presumed in- - court. Prosecutors cannot comment on the details of the investigation. However, because Begaye was employed in positions in- volving substantial contact with children, investigators are asking anyone who may be aware of other potential victims to call the FBI in Monticello. Charges in the indictment are the result of contact prosecutors allege Begaye had with children and a minor between November of last year through the first few days of this month.
