Show THE ZEPHYRJULY 1991 PAGE 15 If our own survival wore at stake, there "might" be more excuse for us to cause the amount of species extinction that we are presently causing on the planet But mankind la cursed with a fecundity that Is about to overwhelm the entire planet Other species are being eliminated by mankind merely because mankind can't face the problem of its own reproductive success. We are alao killing other species because we do not yet know our own needs. We try to conceal the emptiness of our lives by hiding behind larger and larger piles of material possessions. The raw materials to construct these "goods" are frequently extracted at the cost of extinction to other specles-- if we even bother to notice. Thoreau created die expression "lives of quiet desperation." That seema almost desirable when so many now seem to be living "lives of noisy frustration." Inundated beneath piles of new toys, the human being underneath contlnuea to atarve. ALL-AMERICA- N AGENCY 505 No. Main 259-649- 3 Recreation as an Extractive Industry Louise Liston, Garfield County's preeminent commissioner, begins her favorite Meet Our Real Estate Team speech by labeling recreationists "weekend lovers of the land." No argument Uke the other "hard" extraction Industries such as mining, where value is taken from the land but nothing Is paid back, so also do most of the recreationists take their pleasure from the public lands but do little to ensure that this value is protected and preserved for those In the future. Many more "greed lea" than "green lea" are wearing Lycra. So too for the outdoor recreation companies "living off the public lands." Just try and get one of these beneficiaries of the public lands to do something to protect the land unless the land in question Is crucial to their profits. Now it seems everyone is trying to claim to be an environmentalist Jimmy Walker assures us he's one. Each new project seems to be proposed by people who "care about the environment," as they lay out their plans to "only" bulldoze this road here and that one there. Trouble with really caring about the environment is that It costs one time, money, and energy. If a love of the land Is really a strong value for a person, then it can be worth giving up making more money in order to protect something more valuable, Le. the land. In "up-stat- e" It's peculiar for someone to claim to strongly value something, but not accept payment In that same value area. If one loves the land, protecting the land Is ample reward. If money Is the dominant value driving a person, then it Is only ressonable for them to be rewarded with money. The "greedies" are at least consistent when they demand, money for their efforts. The "greenles" should expect most of their "compensation" to be j paid within the value area they claim to most value. k Again, both are really the "greedies," both are trying to get the greatest in the separate value areas they hold most dear. No claims for altruism accepted here! But a world of difference! j pay-bac- " DON & KAY SWASEY Scrimshaw I hop North Main Moab, Utah 84532 57 Maps & Books Jewelry Turquoise Dinosaur Bone Souvenirs Jewelry Reoairs Home Brewing Supplies Let us be your silversmith Custom Orders Welcome LUNCH DINNER '.11:30 AM 2:00 -- tuesday-frida- TO GO ORDERS PM y 5:30 PM - 10:00 PM seven days a week CAL- L259-777- 6 State Liquor Licensee 801-259-53- 60 S9V eNCr5 4- Mmmm otig: SSD V k-t-Oo trJ fOoCTt -- rRAomorO U0 |
