Show THE ZEPHYRJULY 1991 things just like everyone else, even when that Individual can't afford them and doesn't need ALL AMERICAN AGENCY them . am all for peace In Grand County. And that doesn't mean a sleepy quiet little town. That's the way it was for a while, the sleepy quiet of abandoned stores and vacant houses, of quiet economic tragedies and broken lifestyles. To me, peacefulness Is an Inner quality, which comes to citizens who are not harassed, who are allowed the freedom to make mistakes rather than feel that they are being watched In case they might do something who practices wrong. The best deterrent to crime is a community that is intelligent security measures when necessary, Is not dependent upon city and county agencies to take care of its residents, but only wants to know that some professionals are available, people that they are acquainted with, for some help In the event of a real crisis. I can't believe that last year in Moab there were 658 times that people couldn't deal with an animal problem on their own. I would like to see a system of law enforcement In this county which can be funded for less than $1,069,284. Increasing tourist impacts 'cannot always be blamed for rising budgets and more manpower. In fact, the county's search and rescue expenses are billed to those It helps. And most law enforcement duties address the county and city residents anyway. It's most often the local adults and kids who ride their bicycles unsafely, for example, who speed and drink and thieve and "burgle," who constantly require "assistance" and keep the police officers hopping on matters far removed from real criminal mattera, who swear at the police and wonder why they get bad language back at them, and who generally tend to increase the separation of the police force from the citizenry, reducing the terminology to "them" and "us." So you might call them cops, but if we all called them Peace Officers, maybe we'd better tabs on what their job Is: maintaining the peace. And maybe consolidation keep decisions can be made in an atmosphere of cooperation and fairness to the community.
