Show THEZEPHYRSEPTEMBER 1990 Zephyr: Any other rumors, facts. Information on new development In town? Tom: There ere always rumors about this or that motel chain coming to town. Well, J J. has a sign up, he's going to put In 74 more units (at the Super 8). Now, heres a rumor. Actually, I don't know If Its a rumor or not About the Canyonlands Motel expanding by 75 rooms. Theres been talk of 2 or 3 others, but that's only been talk. Put your money where your discussion comes from. I think there's been 6 or 7 others looking, but nobody has applied for a building permit, to my knowledge. Zephyr: So what happens to It all If the price of gas keeps going up? Will that hurt our tourism? Tom: I'm not well enough versed In tourism to know how much It will affect us. But gas prices also affect the cost of air travel. One airline ticket will buy a lot of gas If you stay In the United States and drive. I think we may see a different face of tourism. We might not see as many foreigners, but well see more Americans. The lid has already been blown off tourism here. My wife runs a bed and breakfast When we started, we filled up at 10:30 at night now we fill up at 2 pm on a Sunday. Sundays used to be not rentable. Now It Is. Zephyr: There was some controversy over funding the Four Comers Narcotics Strike Force. What was vour view? Tom: I support the chief of police. He recommended that we pay the bill and continue on with It Zephyr: What do you think of the argument that the Strike Force will cause a liability problem for the city? Tom: Everything we do has the potential for liability, and tills Is one of the most vulnerable areas at the moment I also believe that If people In Moab wanted to stop drugs we could do It It Isn't up to the Strike Force or the police, everyone has In their minds an Idea of which people In town use and sell drugs. Im sure you have some Idea. Have you gone to them and asked them to stop, for the sake of the kids? Drugs are a real problem In the United States. For kids who get hooked, Its terrible. Some of them get hooked but don't know It, they think they can deal with It Then they get something one day they can't deal with, and It's tough, Its sad. Zephyr: Kokooelll Theater. Is It a good Idea, and will It happen? Tom: Very good Idea, and It will happen. I think the land trade has been done. There are dedicated people working on It from the fine arts center of the university. They've been working with a number of government agencies. And those planning It will make sure It has the least Impact on the land, but still provide a nice facility. Zephyr: How Is the campaign for a public radio station going? Tom: Right now, they are asking for a CIB grant, to go with a federal grant I understand back there there is some wavering. Ive got to make some phone calls, talk to congressmen and senators about It I talked with Howard Nielson, he was one of the representatives trying to fund It Zephyr: Congress shuts down for the summer. How about the Moab CWv Council? Tom: Sounds good to me. But local government Is the closest thing to the people. On a national level, youre not dealing with backed up sewers. In the city, we deal with day to day problems, and we have to be here.
