Show PAGE 7 1990 THEZEPHYRSEPTEMBER Is a compromise possfcle? If sveryons can stick to the facts, I believe It Is. one hand, and vague, obscure explanations on the other, take a front seat to an open mind and common sense, things can only get worse. Ive already heard a new rumor that the BLM Intends to close all jeep roads everywhere. EVERYWHERE. The simple truth Is, If the local BLM ever tried to shut down the Safari, the entire Utah Congressional Delegation (even Wayne Owens) would come down here and hang Gene Nodlne and Brad Palmer by their toes from a tall tree. If the BLM made a grave mistake, It was made In 1 985 when they granted the Safari a categorical exclusion. Obviously, the Safari had already grown dramatically. But the BLM granted a CX anyway. Now that decision has come back to haunt them. If s not the first time that the BLM has tried to accommodate a group and In the end made everyone mad. A couple of years ago (In another BLM district), a miner made and Inquiries about a claim that he wanted to develop. The BLM gave him the the miner, In good faith, moved his equipment Into the area. Within days, the BLM received angry complaints from environmental groups because the claim was In the middle of a wilderness study area. Subsequently, the BLM ordered the miner to cease operations and withdraw from the area. Everyone was mad and everyone had a right to be mad. Mad at the BLM, who could have avoided the mess by doing the right thing In the first place. The current protests by Jeepers Is symbolic of a greater, broader current of anger, distrust, and frustration with government Citizens feel Impotent to bring any change or have any effect at all upon this huge bureaucracy that Is supposed to serve us. None of us can even be sure who we should specifically be mad at Is It the people at the local level who Implement and enforce the rules and regulations? The people at the regional offices who write them? The people In Washington who tell the people In the regional offices to write? I dont know. I dont have a due. But In order to battle with the bureaucracy, we have to operate from a position of objectivity and fact (as hard as that may be), or well never get anywhere at all. However, If rumor on go-ahe- Castle Valley Inn ad, Relax in sophisticated comfort amidst some of the Canyonlands most splendid scenery.
