From the early beginnings of armies, there has always been a need for selected groups of individuals to maintain law and order. Although they have been referred to by various names such as provost, war police, gendarmerie, carabiniere and feld jager, their duties have essentially been the same. The origins of the United States Military Police Corps can be traced as far back as the time of William the Conqueror and the British Army. It was here that' the term "provost was first used. In the Articles of War, signed by Charles I in 1629, it was writ ly troublesome; and require men worthy of trust. Major General Harry Hill Bandholtz who is credited with developing the details for organization of the Military Police Corps insisted on high professional standards in his general order number 180 published on Oct. 15, 1918 . . . "to insure a prompt and .efficient organization of the Military Police Corps, it should be borne in mind that the nature of its responsibilities and duties require an exceptionally high standard of intelligence, education and physical condition in the enlisted personnel.
