Show Sports THE SAMPLER, Friday, August 8, 1980 Post Library Summer Reading Program ends " "TO By Dick Whitaker usS tp Dugway High School football coach Steve Larson is getting his first look at the 1980 edition of the Mustangs. His training opened July 28 with 33 players trying out. So far the coach says he is hot sure what the team will look like. He has six returning lettermen who started on last years team. THE STARTERS coming back include tight-en- d ng . Brad Eva, fullback John Bates, kicker Jimmy VanLeeuwen, end Jeff Burke, guard jeff Carter, tackle Scott Dolle and defensive end and utility back Lennie Williams. Larson says about the only area wher ehe feels the team is strong is the offensive line. That segment of the team is returning almost intact. The punting game will remain strong with the return of Jim VanLeeuwen, who the coach considers as one of the finest in the state. The defease should lie strong, at least as good as List years. SOME newcomers to watch; John Witkowski, who can run the 40 in 4.7. He is a good leader and strong. It looks like Digway will have the running Ixick that can punch a hole in the opponents line. Coach Larson is also pinning his hopes on Scott Dolle who moves up from the JV ranks. In the line-- 1 tucker slot he is aggressive, likes to hit and can take . charge. Other JVs who move, into the varsity team, and will probably start are: Jack Engle, Tracy Mullendore, Larry White, Steve Bruce and Andy Dolle. Coach Bruce says Engle is a big strong offensive lineman who should make his presence known in most of the game. Coach Larson says its his offesne that is the big question mark. With the big exception of John Bates, who averaged 4 yards per carry , and racked up 100 yards against South Summit, most of the other spots are up for grabs. The Witkowski youngster could fill one of the gaps. STILL THE coach is optimistic about the coming season. He .says the team is small, but extremely aggressive and full of desire. He said he is working them really hard, but they continue to dig in and Summer Reading Program graduates display broad grins on completion special honors for reading 34 books. Those 4 losses came at the hands of South Summit twice and Park City twice. In all four of those games the Mustangs played them to the wire, only to lose in the waning moments of the game. It wont be long before Larsons charges have an opportunity to prove their worth. They open the exhibition season against East Carbon here at Dugway on Friday, August 29th. Game time is 7:30 p.m.. The following week the exhibition games continue with the annual trek to meet tough Grantsville on the 5th of September.
