Whitaker One of Dugway 's Did Guard is leaving on May 16th. Thats the day that DPG Fire Chief Shirley Neel retires after almost 29 years with the department. He and his wife Joyce plan to retire to their home in Lehi where he says hell spend his time fishing, remodeling his home, and going to school. CHIEF Neel came to Dugay in May 1951, working on the construction of Michael Army Airfield. In September of that year he start- - -edwith the Fire Department as a fireman drawing $189.00 per payday every two weeks. Starting firemen today get over 500 dollars each payday. In 1961 he was promoted to Driver - Operator. Ten years later he was named Crew Chief and in June 1974 he was named Chief. CIHEF NEEL and Joyce have four children, all married and all living in Utah. They have 12 grandchildren. He said the toughest part of his job was the responsibility of the safety of those who live here. He added that we have never had a fatal fire at Dugway. His biggest fires were when the trailer burned on the Northwest Decon Pad last year, andin 1974 the golf shack caught fire and burned. He said it was tough to keep up with the changes in Fire Service, and he said the Airfield is a great concern with the increased amount of activity at that facility. WHEN ASKED what gift he would most like to give the Department before leaving, he said, More help. We are working about five short right now although, he said, Dugway is in good shape, as far as fire prevention goes. We have real professional firemen, plenty of water and good equipment. I also would like to' see those old international pumpers replaced with the new Commenting on the changes at Dugway, Chief Neel said he saw that B-come in on its last flight, that one that is setting out there in the desert. He said he also saw the first jet fighter land, the first jet bomber and the first 29 C5A. Fire Chief Neel represents the highest standards in his field. He and Joyce have been good friends and they will be missed. We wish them a long and happy retirement, and good - fishing. orange studies tory accidents, or, as in this case, possible expo- sure in Vietnam.
