They were to survive, adapt, and even flourish. ADDITIONALLY, to quote the President of the . United States: . . tAfan Americans have played a significant rote in the creation of a dynamic and pluralistic America, with their enormous contributions to our science, arts, industry, government and commerce, .r, i Unfortunately, we have not always fully appreciated the talents and the contributions which Asian Americans have brought to the United Suites. Until recently, our immigration and naturalization laws discriminated against them. They were also subjected to discrimination in education, housing and employment. And during World War 11, our Japanese American citizens were treated with suspicion and fear. Yet, Asians of diverse origins from China, Japan, Korea, the FhiHipines, and Southeast Asia continued to look to America as a land of hope, opportunity, and freedom. At last their confidence in the United States has beenjustified. We have succeeded in removing the banters to full participation in American life, and we welcome the newest Asian immigrants to our from Indochina displaced by polishores tical and social upheavals. Their successful integration into American society and their positive and active participation in our national lire demonstrates the soundness of Americas policy of continued openness to peoples from Asia and the Pacific. . . cans, we at Dugway and people throughout the United States and the Armed Forces are celebrating, in recognition of our Asian Pacific Americans, the many contributions they have made that have enriched our American culture. America, the land of opportunity, was built on a strong foundation of contributions by people of many origins. The Asian Pacific Islanders came to America as immigrants, believing in freedom and the right to compete on equal terms for economical political, educational and social advancement. WHO ARE these Americans? They are Japanese, Chinese, Philippines, Koreans, Pacific Islanders and Vietnamese. All came with the high hope of a dream of America as a land of opportunity and democracy. The hard experiences of the Asian immigrant were those of all immigrants, separated by language, culture, and customs, but compounded by racial factors. The problems of survival in a strange and sometimes hostile land were monumental and many were to leave in defeat or to escape into the urban ghetto. In the burgeoning West, the Asians were a substantial force in its growth and development in railroading in mining, in lumbering in fishing in farming and in the cities. One of the most enjoyable moments of thenight came in a scene from a play performed by Greg Brown and Annita Palmer. For as much rough stuff as Brown receives in' . athletics, nothing quite matched Palmers quick right hand as she dapped him not once, but twice ing their act. BROWN did retaliate, however, by tossing Palmer from side to side in retribution. All in all it was great fun watching. Others to perform in play scenes were Sam Liddiard - Patty Shrove and Carla Brown - Debbie Jones. For Green, it was his 4th straight placing in the top three since the departments inception in 1975.
