Show THE ZEPHYR /JUNE-JULY 2008 ACROSS AME RIGA. The Good, the Bad, the Ugly...the Weird. CARHENGE | Out on the prairie, away from the cares of the world, modern day Druids gathered to build an exact replica of Stonehenge. For years, this work of art sat mostly unnoticed by the side of a road in western nebraska. Now, the “amenities economy” has even found its way here. A visitor center/curio shop has been constructed on-site, that sells everything from Carhenge T-shirts to souvenit shot glasses. For godsake, it even has its own web site. THE ELEVATED TOILET At least this privvy hasn’t been commercialized yet. But give it some time and somone will find a way to turn a buck here too. GATEWAY: The Ultimate Obscenity of. the Day About 10 years ago, billionaire John Hendricks, founder of the Discovery Channel, bought 6000 acres of land at Gateway, Colorado because he wanted to “save it.” But he couldn't leave well enough alone. Once his 27,000 square foot home was finished, he spent mil- lions more to commercialize what had once been one of the most beautiful pastoral scenes in the rural west. Now “Gateway” is a corporate nightmare come true. Disneyfication in spades. 19 |
