Show THE ZEPHYR/ AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2003 US 191 & the FORGOTTEN PAST @ AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH shot on April 27, 1957 shows the old highway as it passes the future entrance to Arches NP. At top center, the Arches "rock house" is clearly visible. But no sign of the future entrance road. Or visitor center. Or the Potash RR tracks. In 1957, the monument entrance was five miles north. Ed Abbey might be in this photo, but is more likely waving on page | Construction of the 'new hwy,’ now about to be replaced again, is visible at left of photograph. DEAD MAN's CURVE: The old road snaked its way up Moab Canyon for several miles. This blind curve caused many an accident. The remains of a carnival ride, which went over the edge 50 years ago, can still be seen at the bottom of the adjacent canyon. GEORGE FOX clearly left his initials on a stone wall, 30 miles south of Moab in 1889. (see June/July issue) The inscription on the left is just south of the Arches National Park entrance. THE OLD COLORADO RIVER BRIDGE: This Herb Ringer photo shows the old river bridge in 1956. All that remains of it today is the north abutment. CONTROLLING BANK EROSION. Before UDOT began spending millions of dollars to make road improvements, road crews found more innovative (and less expensive) ways to protect the highways. Near Dalton Wells, where Courthouse Wash runs close to the highway, old junk cars were utilized to stabilize the streambed and keep flash floods from reaching the highway. |
