Show I C8 — The Herald Journal Logan Utah Sunday January 12 2003 Sons of Dear Labe' A novel by Douglas D Alder onight there were no ghosts but Harriet cried aiv cried She had never felt so alone ' had neveftrembled like ihitfHer fear mounted The wiin whined a sandy wheezy whine Far away a coyote howled She lay gazing at the caulking between the logs as never before The rows swirled in her consciousness through the light of the flickering candle she and Everett had always placed beside their bed But tonight with her mind alternating between sleep and delirium she forgot the candlelight and began to lose control Her head was throbbing and she trembled It was as though she were still seven years old at a time when the attic was full of the supernatural Drugged with exhaustion and helplessness she fell into a fitful sleep finally unaware of the dawn Her body wanted to separate from her spirit She seemed to be spinning falling It was not a dream And it was not dying She just could not get her pregnant body and troubled spirit back together Sweating profusely in a cold sticky sweat she felt she was standing aside and watching her body shake Terror and surrender seemed to be pulling at each other A clamor of confusion drew her toward It seemed like screaming— the shrill clanging shook her from her bed Eyes half open hands outstretched she groped forward Three steps woke her to the realization that she was staggering toward the bell banging on her door In the habit of civility she answered clearing her throat: “Yes Sister O Piigmirc I’m ill right”' “Harriet 1 just wanted to bring you a fresh loaf of bread and check on you” “I know I look awful I just overslept a bjjl I feel fine” The kindness shook herinto action She realized how close she had come to a careless collapse Without reason she responded turning to her toilet to dressing to surviving She did not weigh the arguments of having lost purpose against the need to live for the baby How close she had come to the abyss aulo-matical- ty See tomorrow's Herald Journal Jo JANUARY 14 for the next install- ment of this story fitness center opens USU By USU Media Relations With the theme “The WEIGHT is Over!’’ an official ribbon-cuttin- g ceremony will be held at noon Jan IS to open a new fitness facility at Utah State University An open house of the new facility follows until 2 pm University President Kermit L Hall and Associated Students at Utah State University President Celestial Starr Bybee will perform the ribbon cutting AH students faculty and staff are invited to attend Refreshments will be served and representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the facility “The Nelson Fieldhouse Fitness Center located on the upper level of the fieldhouse adjacent to the indoor track is now operating thanks to the vision and efforts of students and the leadership of the Associated Students of Utah State University” said Shelly Swasey ASUSU Athletics It includes the latest in cardiovascular techVice-Preside- nt nology including treadmills spinning bicycles g stair steppers and a variety of machines During the academic year the facility is open weight-liftin- Utah State University President Kermit L Hall was appointed to the board of directors for the National Association of State Universities and Land-GraColleges (NASULGC) He will serve a three-yeterm NASULGC is the nation's oldest higher education association Founded in 1887 it is a voluntary association of 214 public institutions research universities nt ar non-pro- fit land-gra- nt thru daily from 6 am to midnight and on Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm The facility was funded through second tier tuition and student fees and is free to enrolled students ‘ Faculty and staff may purchase memberships on a trimester basis The year is broken into three trimesters and the membership rate is $100 per trimester A discounted rate of $250 for 12 months is also available This charge only applies to the Fitness Center portion of the Nelson Field-hous- e and state university systems Its members enroll more than 32 million dents award approximately a degrees annually and have an estimated 20 stu- half-milli- it JANUARY 18 9 AM--9 PM Tuesday -
