and Russ Francis To those and Lynette Jones Randy Jones and families Morris WE again” “They knew when he was twenty that he was destined to accomplish most unusual things” said Woods: “And so the Oneida Stake Board of Education was Woods said students left behind wonderful accounts of their days at the Academy Mark Hart in remembering his old teacher Emil Nelson wrote “Man how he could concentrate When he had his nose in a book he was gone I whispered to a kid next to me Til bet I can sneak right out of that window and he'll never notice 'I inched over the walls stopped and checked him He was still lost I then inched along some more slipped out the open window went about and around to the front steps into the hall and sneaked hack into my seat He didn't even notice at all” The advent of federal funding to public schools spelled the end of the Oneida Stake Academy Competing with public schools which offered free tuition the Mormon Church phased out the Academy in 1922 The building though continued to host classes until 1990 It was added to the national register of Historic places in 1977 formed” Woods said “Members believed that there needed to be a place for their children to be able to have a foundation of their spiritual heritage” j The Saints in the Oneida Stake donated funds for the construction of the attractive y academy building made of cut stone Church architect Don Carlos Smith drew up the plans for the three-stor- edifice According to Woods men from the Oneida Slake were called on a mission to quarry stone from the John Nuffer homestead northeast of Preston in the area between the Cub River and Worm Creek “Al work was dime by hand” Woods said “Missionaries laboring sweating carrying that stone — it’s a wonderful story" Stone from that same quarry will be used in the renovation Woods said The students may have left the building hut the building never left the students 1893 Continued from A3 general upkeep of the buildings we already have We've never had enough money to extend it beyond that" Norton said although Cache District's elementary schrxils fall into compliance with the numbers Cox suggested which are 90 students per class or 630 in schrxils for grades kindergarten through sixth the size of the 89 Centers and high schrxils are over the eligibility limit There arc currently 427 students at Mountain Crest exceeding Cox's suggested number by 327 and Sky View's population of 1484 would have to find new space for 384 of their students The district's numbers are also expected to jump within the next 10 years said Norton so there will he an estimated 7000 more students to place Although there will obviously need to be changes made to make room for this influx of students the passage of this bill would pul definite pressure on the district and the taxpayers he said “With those numbers in mind we'd have to factor in at least one more high school and one more 89 center in addition to what we already have” said Norton “I just don’t know with the economy the way that it is if we can put a burden on the taxpayers” 1 vWftlR Floyd Pejerson who wrote his master's these in 1937 on the academy wrote “without the generosity and united support of the Saints of the Oneida Stake the building of the aeadcniy would have been Joseph G Nelson a former instructor and principal unite “Pages could he tilled with experiences of how these ruffian diamond hoys from the cattle ranches and the farms and the girls whose unsophistication and social affairs made them awkward were transformed into cultured stu- impossible" It's ironic said Wtxxls that donations built it and donations will save it “Donations is what not only caused it to he built hut sustained it" Woods said "Thai's why I don't ever say if the academy is moved and renovated it's when" dents" Woods said he believes the Oneida Stake Academy's best days are yet to come The restored academy can he put to a number of economically beneficial uses The Academy would go on to produce many famous alumni including two future presidents of the LDS Church: Ezra Taft Benson and Harold B Lee Benson would also serve as Secretary of Agriculture under President Dw ight D Eisenhower “Its greatest work is yet to he done" Woods said “The building served a vcr critical part in the early education of Franklin County and it can again serve as a catalyst as an interpretive center and the icing on the cake — a place where they can have civic meetings dances wedding receptions and all of the “You don't have any schrxils like that where you have
